korda gotta be dominating these nobodies if he wants to be a top 10 player. he's such a great hitter, but he gets too comfortable and passive in baseline rallies. when they give him a nice high bounce he needs to be shooting for winners.

The Korda / Hamad Astana SF match was better than Meddie vs Humbert Beijing QF. That said, this isn't Davis Cup. The trumpeters playing after every point have been insufferable these last few matches & I'm glad I'm not alone. They were told to shut up & had to change seats. It was really distracting. Even the commentators were over it.

The match itself was an epic 3-set, 3 tiebreaker battle of the service holds. Both men served extremely well, but Korda was a bit more consistent throughout & less physically fatigued. The American's strategy was simple: hold serve, move thickums around the court, & don't fall for the crafty mind games. He did all three very well to win 6-7 (8-10) 7-6 (2) 7-6 (3). In the 2nd & 3rd sets, Korda holding serve made the difference.

Every time Hamad tried different tactics to disrupt rhythm, Korda stayed focused & didn't fall for Hamad's mind games. Korda learned from his losing Zhuhai match against Khachanov. In the end, those stalling tactics only robbed Hamad of momentum. The commentators clocked it too & did not think it was sound strategy. The mid-match fights with the umpire over calls, taking way too long to return from set break, & calling for a medical timeout instead of having his thigh wrapped before the match, all backfired on Hamad.

What really did Hamad in was breaking his racket at 3-1 in the 3rd set tiebreak which resulted in a point penalty. The umpire couldn't ignore it. Hamad had already received a violation for hitting a lines-person in the leg with a ball. This caused him to lose serve & be down 1-4 to Korda. After that, it was a body wrap on the proceedings. The wild card couldn't control his temper & lost the match to the cool-headed American.
