Audio-Technica ATH-M50x vs Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro | Why I Decided To Switch...

Why would you choose 250 ohm version over 80 ohm one? I understand if you don't have an audio interface or amplifier and just want to use a laptop you should choose 80 ohm version. But are there any advantages of 250 ohm version? As I can see they both (but also 990 PRO 250 ohm) have the same price (currently 144 euros on Thomann).

I was thinking about taking one of these (DT770 80 or 250 or DT990 250 ohm) primarily for mixing and mastering. I will connect them to Focusrite Clarret+ 8 pre interface.

DT770 & DT990 always over Audio technica! Personally hated audio technica as it was uncomfortable, definitely not designed for long period of use.
Also find Beyerdynamic is tuned better

I bought a pair of high impedance DT 770's. I thought they were AWFUL. Maybe there is a break in period. I'm not sure. I bought a pair of ATH M50x headphones after trying the 770's for a sanity check and was blown away. I RMA'd the DT 770's assuming I got sold a pair of knock off's via amazon. They got returned to a authorized dealer and were authentic supposedly. Either way I thought they were terrible. I went as far as buying multiple headphone amps and DAC's to see if my setup was the problem. It wasn't. I'd like to get my hands on another pair to listen to at a music store or something. Maybe the ones I got were duds

I can take my M50x on the plane. I can walk around the street with them. I can chuck them in my bag and go. Try doing that with a hard wired DT770 and its huge ass fixed coiled cable, and big round cans and you'd look like a clown and trip all over the place. Go with the M50x if you want your headphones to fit a commuter lifestyle with great sound, especially the BT2 version which has LDAC and sounds great wirelessly. Just make sure to upgrade the earcups to the Brainwavz ProStock Perforated ear cups. This is an extra expense but it is worth it. These perforated earcups are so good, Audio-Technica should consider upgrading the base design with them out of the box.

What do you recommend for bass recording? I use a Captor X and usually record bass with fuzz and some OD as well as some other effects and I've been struggling to find a solid option

The first thing I do with these whenever I swap is buy new better thicker softer earpads.
The DT Pro is slightly too small for my head and the weak spots are the plastic joints at the cups and the joints at the headband whereas the M50 CAN get loose and has a similar weak/wear spot, with the major difference that the DT can keep on going even though 1 joint crumbles or breaks.

I'm looking to upgrade from KRK headphones to the DT 770s soon, the KRKs were the only ones available at my local music store so I got em, I only use em for making beats

I'm currently using an M30x and thinking of upgrading to an M50x. I don't know what the comfortability differences are but the M30x feels very comfortable for me and I hope it will translate well when I'm able to upgrade to the M50x. Years of wear and tear has made the headband extensions a little loose, so it doesn't sit properly on my head. That's pretty much the only comfortability issue I have with the M30x.

Whats your opinion of the audio technika m40x ?

I have the DT770 Pro 32 Ohms and they sound Awesome using them now over 3 years, I listen to psytrance and stuff and when i feel i need more bass i use my hip dac 2 which is awesome with the extra bass button, on the laptop i use some times a chrome bass equalizer extesion if i feel to need a little extra bass the headphones are extremly extremly clear and soft clouds havenly sounding in the highs and the bass is nice and punchy which makes me enjoy the music on another level. I love them. I have the M50x as well but i gave them to my mom because i did not use them that much I used to watched movies with them it it was great but now I dont watch no more movies and for music i prefer 770s.

I wish I could put a picture of my MX50xs in the comments, they are in absolute tatters after the years and years of daily use, but they eventually broke at the joints and became unusable. I've been using MDR 7506s in the meantime but I'm not sure I like the frequency response, even after using them for a couple of years. This video has been helpful before ordering another pair of 50s; I will likely check out the 770s!

one reason for me to buy audiotechnica m40x , if the cable breaks , wich hapens alot with me , i can buy another one for 10 bucks and solved problem.
but the dt 770pro look so god but the wire looks thin af and if it breaks you need to spend another 150 bucks lol

After comparing both headphones and thinking for month which one to buy I'm happy to say that I bought them both 😁

I went through around 10 different styles of cheapo chinese earpads to find ones that fix the discomfort of the m50x's while still sounding nice. I ended up with these leather pads that are an inch tall and really thick with narrow conical insides, which eliminated most of the reverb I found in other large leather pads. They can be pretty sweaty, but really comfortable otherwise.

I've been using the DT 770 250ohm as my only studio headphones for about a year now.
I just bought the ATH-M50x intending them to just be my listening headphones while I travel. But now I use the 770s for writing, and both for mixing. I find the ATH give me a better grasp of the bass on most systems. While the 770 is great for when you need to reign in the highs

I haven’t tried both, but own the ATH-40X and it was great until I tried the YAMAHA MT5 and bought the MT8. The MT8 has a very balanced response with some brilliance

Rock & Roll = Audio-Technica ATH-M50x

As an update, a lot of laptops now are rated for high-impedance headphones via their stock 3.5mm jack. I have a Macbook Air M2 (2022) and it can handle up to 150 ohms up to 1.25v RMS and > 150 ohms up to 3v RMS. I have a 120 ohm headphone that I plug directly into my Mac and it sounds perfectly fine, I haven't noticed it being more quiet than if I plugged it into an amp. That being said, I would definitely not use a stock laptop/phone/tablet with 250 ohms. The DT 770 Pro 80 ohms should be perfect for most people.

I feel like 770 are more of a studio environment headphones while M50x are more like a live sound headphones. Am I right?

I've been using my M50X for voiceover recording and mixing for the past 8 years and really enjoy them. However, I've always wanted to try Beyer Dynamic headphones but didn't like the attached cable. Thank you Sir, informative. I've been wondering what to get as a second headset for recording. I currently use 770 Pros 80 ohm with good amplification (Arcam A8). I used to use Sennheiser Professional HD 25 as they have a great balance, however they do not match up for longevity, they have an odd two prong plug to each driver, that ends up not working, DO NOT get the HD 25, they don't last even though they sound more accurate, sorry, you have no idea where I'm coming from. As a professional recording engineer (retired).

I just picked up the DT77. I'm waiting to get them. I want to use them to play guitar through a pedal. I'm hoping they work well

Listening to your video with a pair of DT770s. 80 ohm version that is plugged straight into my Mac without a separate amp. These are the most comfortable headphones I've ever used.

Went to the store and thought the M50s sounded better. The build quality feels super good. I have a pair hd600 so I can use them for clarity.

I have the 990 pro and the 700 pro x is a gaming headset better

Like you I've had the ATH-M50x you many years, they sound great but I find them a bit uncomfortable after hours of use. How are you finding the DT 770's ?

Funny enough i've Seen another review of someone saying the exact contrary about the confort, i was saying that the clamp force of the 770 was too much for extanded periods of time

The covering on pads degrade because the fatty-acids from our skin breaks them down. It varies from person to person (and the environment they're used in - hot tends to equal sweaty) how quickly they're affected, but they'll last a lot longer if they're regularly cleaned with a "soft, damp cloth".

I just received and returned my DT770 pro 80 Ohm because they had significant crackling at mid, and mid low frequencies. The bass was a bit flat, crisp mid / High frequencies. I would’ve kept them if it wasn’t defective. Idk if it’s the specific pair i got, but I’m buying a sennheiser instead.
