Is the Seiko Willard Overpriced? | The Seiko Prospex SPB151J1 "Captain Willard" Review

Its a design classic so I'm not surprised Seiko are milking it, all the Swiss brands do exactly the same.

For a watch that runs over a thousand US dollars the fact that it doesn't keep good time says it all.

I prefer the crown position of the older Willards. This one being north of 4 just looks weird.

The movement in this watch inconsistent, unreliable, and quite frankly, trash.

Vraagprijs betaald in een Swiko boutique. Niet slim - maar alsnog erg bij met deze Willard. Gebruik m dagelijks naar de sportschool waar ook gezwommen kan worden

Overpriced. Never go above a grand for a seiko. Your not gonna get value for money.

I prefer the SRP 777! I believe It's closer to the original with no unnecessary extra features !

My STO Seiko turtle is 7 seconds fast a day, so that watch should be better being a lot more expensive.

Esse atual Seiko atualizado INFELIZMENTE nao é do mesmo tamanho do Seiko 6105 de 1970 usado no filme. Ja pus os dois nas maos e infelizmentesse atual é sutilmente menor. A versão classica primeira é maior e tem maior VISIBILIDADE NO PULSO!

Just get a steeldive homage. Sixty-five bucks and has all the same specs expect it has a Seiko NH35 for its movement and a ceramic bezel.

I’ve been putting off buying the Willard primarily due to the price. I love Seiko designs but have gotten tired of the qc issues over the years. When some micro brands can do it right and have competitive prices it makes buying a Seiko a questionable choice. Sometimes it comes down to more than just value or the fact that something is worth the going rate or not. I think when you love a watch it might not be worth the money but that’s ok because you love it. With that being said I’m considering the Willard because I love it but I think I would be happier going pre owned to help feel like I’m still getting some value for money. Will I buy one.. I don’t know but I find it interesting that I don’t thinks it’s worth the money yet I still can’t get it out of my head.

I just got one today and that's quite a beautiful piece on my hand. I never think about the price too much. If you love it, then it's worth the price

lovely - it just has character.. some things between the specs often make it worth it.. ordered one, but probably i'll put it on a black zulu nato strap 😎

Seiko Turtle is the way to go, I got the Padi Turtle Pepsi and its stunning.

Yes overpriced and poorly regulated. Open the caseback-on the rotor, "Made in china" . Dishonest marketing from Seiko IMO. Not recommending this watch or movement.

I wouldn't have a terrible issue with the price if they included a better movement in it. It's a funning thing, I'm finding the Grand Seiko's a better value these days as compared to the entry level offerings.

I agree with your assessment completely. I bougt this watch last year for £980, I still think it was too much. £350 would be more realistic. I also swapped out the bracelet for an Uncle Seiko rubber strap makes a big aesthetic difference. Incidentally I bought a seiko dive watch in 1999 for ,£62. It was replaced by the above watch.

Most comfortable watch I own. It is so good on a tropic strap that I have put my SKX aside and now use my Willard for EDC.

In the late 1960s,when the Rolex and Seiko Divers wete Tool Watches,I chose the Breitling AOPA Navitimer Cosmonaut,another Tool watch! These Days,they are all toys for collectors!

Seiko has a significant gap in their movement line-up. The 6Rxx is a perfectly respectable movement at the £400-700 price point but becomes woefully inadequate for the "mid range" of £1000-2000 that Seiko has started repositioning some of their lines at - especially when you consider that the likes of Longines are packing heavily modified/upgraded 2892 based movements or, in the case of Nomos, Christopher Ward etc. are offering in house movements .

Thing is, they already have a highly modern, sophisticated movement to fill the gap between the 6Rxx and the 9Sxx grand seiko/marinemaster movements - the 4L/6L family.

Expensive watch, but worth it! I love mine!

A lot comments on this thread are absolutely correct about what is value and what is "worth." At full retail of $1200 I wouldn't go near the Willard - but if I could find a used, hardly worn and pristine one for around $800 I'd be tempted.
I have owned and do own Rolex, Girard-Perregaux, Omega, Raymond Weil, Longines and Hamilton watches and apart from the Rolex, not one of them did I pay anywhere near the full retail price. The only watch I've ever paid full retail price for was a Citizen Promaster - and that was cheap anyway.
We all know the prices of watches - the trick is to shop around and be in the right place at the right time and make your purchase when the store is either closing down when the item is heavily discounted or being cleared as "old stock" or "shop soiled."
Hence somebody like me who has never earned more than 24 grand per year in his life can wear an Omega or Longines.

Still on the fence on the Willard. 2 things holding me back. 1 The movement. I hear it's accuracy is not that great. 2 Seiko's QC.

The bottom line is if you’ve been given a mission to terminate a renegade Colonel, this is the watch you have to wear. The price really doesn’t matter.
