I have an empty house. Trouble is, if I rent it out and the tenants ruin it then I get screwed. If it ends up in court the Judge will side with the tenants generally. What ever gets ruined they say 'oh, your pristine floors are 10 years old? then you get no compensation' and so on... I've been there, done that. Sure, give tenants more rights but make them pay for damages and whatever the repair costs are despite the age of what they have ruined. I guarantee you that the current system sucks for landlords, too many rogue tenants who get away with almost everything! The government is to blame for the current situation because landlords have had enough.

I was homeless in my teens, I know what it is like sleeping out in the middle of winter. I lost my house a few years ago due to a divorce and was left with nothing, I just had my car breakdown and I am living out of my 1972 caravan as I can't afford any rentals. My back injury stops me gaining full time work, and I never thought I would be in this position at 50 years old, but I didn't think in my lifetime I would see the housing market inflated as it is today. Luckily my kids have their mums inheritance to have something they can live in, that has made me happy.
