Question along these lines. Will the same procedure be as effective with Spar Urethane or Spar Varnish? Another thing I tried to keep the dust particles away is put the finish product in a paper box. So far I don't think it is a good idea because it seems to take longer to dry. However, ther are fewer dust particles. If I had a real paint booth it would probably be better. Maybe someday soon. thanks HABD

It is also sold a lot of times as "Tung Oil Finish". This is done a lot in the industry. If people learn what finishes are they are shocked how much fluff is being sold to people.

If you want to build very fast but want the final coat to dry fast to reduce dust - brush on as many coats of straight poly (lightly sand between coats) as you want. Then sand the final dry coat with 320 to remove all brush marks. Finally wipe on a couple of coats of the thinned poly.

I am very reluctantly going to make a safety police comment. Pre-retirement, my work we regularly got independent safety audits On the plant and workshops I was responsible for. Of course they had to find something so they can put safety audit actions on you. One of the topics that was a favourite was of course unmarked containers of chemicals that had been decanted from the stores without labels identifying the contents. Though frustrating that they managed to find a non conformance item, one of my technicians had a friend who’s wife managed to drink an identified caustic liquid from a can that did untold internal damage. We even had a speciation of the size of the letters being greater than 3mm. So always worth writing on any container what it’s contents are especially if it is usually identified as a source of drinkable liquids. I hope this does not come across as lecturing as we have all done such things in a workshop environment.

Hi, James. I took your advice and made my own wipe-on poly to finish a project. Works great! I just applied fourth coat and I think I’ll do two more. I made some a couple of months ago and had left-over. I sealed it in a glass jar but it hardened up anyway. How do I store left-over 1:1 wipe-on poly?

Just curious, to get it to cure faster, could wipe on poly (which is 50/50 with mineral spirits) have acetone added like 50 poly/ 40 mineral spirits/ 10 acetone?? Or 50 poly/ 45 mineral spirits/ 5 acetone. I know acetone is powerful and dries quickly. Mineral spirits is pretty oily. Wondering if just a touch of Acetone could help dry up the oiliness of the spirits but also not damage the poly??

I thinned the poly for a long time, but I finally discovered you can use a disposable microfiber cloth and wipe it on, and the finish looks the same. If you prefer putting on a large number of really thin coats, go ahead and thin it. But don't have to. The regular stuff will wipe on just fine.

Note: I have never, ever found a way to brush on poly without it having bubbles. But a wipe-on finish doesn't bubble.

I have been getting excellent results using Minwax gloss wipe on poly for my wood turnings. I ran out a couple days ago and went down to my local hardware store for some more, but was taken aback by the current price of this stuff. Add to that the cost of buying smaller vessels to store it in and I decided against and came home to look up making my own. I had watched a video or two some time back so I knew some people were just thinning conventional poly varnish. After researching, I went back to the store to find that Minwax fast drying poly varnish was $16.95 for a quart while wipe on poly was $23.95 for a quart. Anyway, long story short, I bought the varnish, thinned it roughly 50% and finished up the piece that I was working on when I ran out. I have to say I cannot tell any difference in how the home made version works compared to the factory product. I got a comparable glass smooth and clear finish. I'm sold...I'll never buy wipe on again.
