My biggest issue with Toji is that when he returned in Shibuya it feels wasted. Nothing was accomplished. Yes it meant something to Toji for him to kill himself to save his son. However that itself means nothing to any character in the story. It serves as something for us the audiance but holds no real impact to megumin himself the one person who abive everyone else deserves to have that moment mean something impactful. It feels wasted, a fantastic idea for a characters return wasted on the audiance and not used to impact the world or the characters in it. The only thing it did was make it so Megumin didnt get torched with the others and so he was weak enough to pop mahoraga out which also feels like it was only used to show Sakunas strength and nothing more. Jogo already showed us Sakunas strength expertly so that also felt lackluster sadly. Toji deserved better.

Toji is one of my favorite characters in Shonen. ESPECIALLY after how he was animated in S2 of the anime. Seeing his face after realizing who Megumi was (right before Megumi swung his sword) is what solidified all of it for me.

I think Toji and Maki are good examples of why a tragic backstory does not, in any way, justify a person's horrible choices or actions.

Maki was despised and abused by her family for the same reason Toji was, but she turned out to be a much better person. She was pushed in the same direction, but did not budge.

I would also like to propose that Toji Zenin is anologous to "The Monkey King", which is why he refers to himself as the monkey. The Monkey king also fights against the heavenly gods analogous with the Jujutsu Clans. Gojo Satoru vs Toji could also be seen as the fight between the monkey king and the Buddha, where the monkey king loses. Gojo being Buddha's analogue is an obvious from when he says "Throughout Heaven and Earth, I Alone Am The Honored One" which is what the Buddha is supposed to have said when he was born. Gojo also tries to reform society, similar to the Buddha. Welcoming any comments or additions!

Despite how overplayed this narrator speech is, it truly does encapsulate the fundamental beauty of Toji character. A man cursed with no godlike abilities. Who in the face a deep loneliness, depression, and meaninglessness. Discarded all which he held deer in order to attempt to be free from his humanity.

Tojis true self showed when he killed the girl but not gojo or the other guy when they were injured and bleeding, he had the power to finish both them off, but instead he chose to leave them alive, and he chose to fight again as well, it's Gojo who because the superiority society gave him let him kill toji in the end despite the score being 1 1 and toji sparing him, so in enforcing the morality of society he lost to the morality of battle

Maybe Toji was the friends we made along the way.

Love how toji being free of cursed energy(the literal "curse" on humanity and also the thing that alienated toji) ironically is what allowed him to affect the story so heavily. Someone unbound by fate and the conventions placed on everyone else by the narrative because of his "imperfection" was the only person able to change fate. He was the most free person in jjk, but he was still bound by trauma. Just a fundamentally human character which makes his parallels with gojo(a lonely god) so good.

I don't think he is self depreciating when he refers to himself as a monkey after defeating both Gojo and Geto. I think it was more of an an adding insult to injury, a twisting of the knife if you will. They were blessed with so much abilities and got waxxed by a mere human with no cursed energy. Albiet a human with much greater physical capabilities than them.

Toji is a very conflicting character, as he commits immoral acts that create destruction and tragedy like killing Riko and being the start of Geto’s descent into madness, but he himself has tragic aspects of himself from being victim of mistreatment from the zenin clan and the loss of his wife.
