You can also partially defoliate a fan leaf and just remove a few blades too. As long as there is one blade left the leaf will not die.

I kept nipping off 2-3 leaves around every two days and it still sunted the growth. But continued like a wild fire after I stopped trimming 5 days later.
Next time I'm going to try removing all I need at once near the end of the vegetative stage.
Cheers a bunch! You are the go to guy for me when it comes to this stuff!

Light can come below from properly angled reflective material. Just like when dumb sunbathers angle reflected light to their face.

Don't ever trim a fan leave that's connected to a budsite. Only those that are directly connected to the stalks. Personally I tuck instead of pluck. Except for any dead and dying leaves.

The leaves have many important functions.

* Act like solar panels to capture and provide energy (top of leaves)

* They have "windows" or ports on the bottom that regulate;
Water out
Co2 in
Oxygen out.

* Act as a warehouse to store nutrients.

It would seem If you remove too many leaves, the plant needs to regrow leaves to support it's needs.
Which would cause a stall or sag in growth.

If you remove too leaves how does the water get out?

Indoors you will only get so much penetration depending on your light(about 18-24 inches). Trim lower and keep above pot clear.

I really don't care for the term "defoliation." Too many people misunderstand it and really stunt their plants by peeling off way too much foliage - right when the plant is trying to put on a massive growth spurt at the beginning of flowering. Simply removing older leaves as they wear out, making sure the plant has light and air getting through it, and of course always removing damaged or sickly leaves is plenty. It's something a good grower should do as maintenance here and there, as opposed to just stripping off a large percentage of leaves all at once.

Frankly lollipopping is a bit over-rated and often over-done, too.... many times people see a good idea and really take it too far.
