You know what is annoying. The price of the external enclosure. They are overpriced.

If you're like me and you find yourself buying a lot of new releases you'll run into "volume key is unknown" errors more often. In that case you don't have to wait for MakeMKV to get the key to rip the disc. If you do the steps you did to make a backup image but DON'T check the "Decrypt video files" box you will make an encrypted backup and once MakeMKV gets the volume key you can open that folder in MakeMKV instead of the disc and convert the files from there. It's pretty much always faster converting from a hard drive/SSD than doing it directly from the disc so it can save some time in the future.

Thanks so much for this guide! It was incredibly easy to understand.

I just bought the drive/enclosure with your affiliate links on Amazon. I'll be coming back to this video when they arrive.
Hope you earned some money this Black Friday! =)

OMG, I've avoided flashing my drive due to how complicated the forums made it sound, this simplified the process in only few steps and it WORKED for my slim LG drive.

Thanks for the video tutorial.

I bought a Verbatim Ultra HD 4K - BDXL drive - SuperSpeed USB 3.1 Gen 1 - external - Bluray-BDRW - USB 3.1unit.
Under the Verbatim logo it's a: Pioneer UD04 v1.14 firmware External Ultra Blu Ray Slim Line unit.
Try to open up a 4k UHD movie.

MakeMKV says:
LibreDrive compatible drive is required to open this disc - video can't be decrypted.
Failed to open disc.

What can I do to solve it?
//Regards DMTM

Will compressing the movies mean that some quality will be lost? Is there a line where that loss begins, or is there a specific compression that is the best for having the same quality but fewer data? I have just set up my Plex/Jellyfin server and bought an LG c3; I'm looking to see how I can save space because I'm using the NAS for family photos as well.

Good about Blu-ray is: HD (Up to 1080p, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray runs in 4K), More Protection with Scratch and Damage, Finger Prints removed, Soft and Smooth Disc, 7.1 Surround Sound and later on Dolby Atmos Audio, Plays it on PlayStation 3 or Later Models, Xbox One and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Only on Xbox One S/X and Xbox Series X, Windows and Mac, Trailer got much better than 90s and before with Movie Trailers, Cases of Blu-ray, No Internet Connection Required, Blu-ray and DVD Disc stacked up with Packages at once, Space Savings, Digital Codes and The name Blu-ray makes scene because of Blue Lasers.

Bad about Blu-ray is: Software Updates, Disc Holders for some Movies and Can't Skip Warnings and Home Entertainment Logos stuff.

If I were to ever get into politics, my main platform would be right to repair and right to use laws. Consumers shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to use and fix the things we buy however we want for personal purposes. But, I digress.

I find it hilarious that this is even a video that has to be put out today. We used to do this stuff back in the early 2000's with dvd's, and early blu-rays and it was pretty common knowledge back then. We really are going in a circle.

I didn't realize that my old-ish LG BD drive was capable of this. Since I have a new LG 42" C3 monitor for my computer, I was motivated to try your advice.
It worked perfectly!
I had to run to Walmart to buy a 4K disc to try it out, and I'm now transferring the disc to my server with Make MKV.
Thanks!

Do you recommend to turn off auto driver updates or something? I don't want to risk to get my drive updated -> to a point where you can't rip anymore.
Or is it safe to use under Win11? Wouldn't it be better to use it under linux?

For 4K, you just need a bluray drive with a firmware version 3.0. I recommend the asus bc-12d2ht 3.0 & asus bc-16d2ht 3.0. I have both and they work fine for 4K discs when using Make MKV.

I prefer a local movie and TV show database to streaming. I have over 2044 movies and 124 TV series. I have the original physical media and MP4 version that I play using Raspberry Pi 4 running Kodi. All of it is stored on a Synology NAS running six 8TB ssd with single drive redundancy, all backed up twice on external mechanical drives.

If I were to have to rebuild the collection from the physical media, it would take about 3 months working on it 8 hrs a day.

great update right on time! i had to format/reinstall my main PC a while back. lost all the tools to rip that i had installed. luckily my pioneer still had the OG firmware so i was good to go. Just grabbed the Harry Potter series on sale on Amazon so wanted to rip them to my NAS. did have one issue with MakeMKV, but that was cause i didnt restart it after registering the beta key so it wouldnt decrypt the bluray. restarted the app and its ripping away right now.

if I have 200 4k movies and it takes an hourish per movie that is 200 hours I have to spend ripping. 200 hours would take 25 days if ripping everyday for 8 hours. yeah I think I can get up off my ass to swap a disc once in a while vs ripping.
