Something bad will happen with e tricycles. Last night on Tepphrasit road i saw one riding with no lights on at 20 kph while bikes, trucks and busses were zooming by at 60 to 80 kph.

Deepest Condolences to the Families, its terrible that this still occurs throughout Asia, and has for many years. More Education/Awareness is Paramount to stop the deaths.

Don’t think it has been confirmed yet that the drinks were spiked at the hostel. More likely that it happened at the infamous Jaidees bar. If it was the hostel then the owners and staff would have legged it back over the border to Vietnam. Let’s hope it’s not left to local police to investigate because everything will be swept under the carpet to protect themselves and keep their pockets full.

To add to the Lao methanol story: It is not Laos specific, Thailand have its fair share of doing it.
Although i am really surprised to hear this from Laos, for several reasons:
1) Tourist places rely on tourists, they would not endanger their livelihood.
2) Alcohol is SO CHEAP in Laos, there is simply NO REASON to use fake. Don't believe me? Example:
One beer (0.33l Beer Lao) Costs around 20-25 baht.
One Can (20L) Of local Laokhao (Rice spirit) 40 degree, costs around 600-650 baht! That is 30-33B/LITER !
And no, not wood alcohol, this is the semi industrial made, pure alcohol for drinking purposes.
So, from one liter, 3 people can get REALLY drunk.
That is 10 Baht / person.

My take on this story is that someone did not care to read some labels, or this was intentional for any reasons imaginable ...

Happened in Europe long time ago: Poisoning can be treated using any scotch Wisky (Macallan, Ballantine and so on) due to its alcohol content(ethanol) to neutralize methanol, it was done in Accident & Emergency
