This is a question for those with more technical prowess and better grasp of the minutiae of CRT technology: how can we modernize it? Can it be miniaturized?
Would it be feasible to use thinner gorilla glass or highly durable plastics like polycarb to fabricate the tube and reduce weight? Could we reduce the depth of these televisions by arranging an array of electron guns covering smaller areas in a grid rather than a single one? Let's solve this!
I realised when playing pcsx2 and playing my ps2 hardware, that crt had its uses. Without using screen filters on the emulator the image looks terrible. Plug my ps2 into a crt and it looks great. I think there an emerging market for crts.
ОтветитьFuck CRTs, they were bulky, heavy and I don't miss them at all, glad they're gone and I don't even need one to play older games, they still look fantastic to me!
ОтветитьModern games look way too tiny on crt monitors... 🗿🗿🗿
ОтветитьI remember from when I was kid but have you seen the black levels?
Ответитьcrt looks good. i miss them
ОтветитьBut CRTs are just so god damned BIG. That's got to be the major reason they lost out to flatpanel. The sheer size difference.
ОтветитьI mean, but on a what 20 something inch monitor?
CRT movement is the best but with Oled, HDR, big screen sizes and 120 fps and vrr it’s a trade off I’m willing to take.
LCDs are shit but at this point getting a CRT is simply not feasible.
We simply have to wait another 10 years until modern displays are as smooth as CRTs always were.
but a CRT has a refresh rate of 15 fms???
ОтветитьNow, imagine, with all the modern innovations we have, what can we do, to make better CRTs?
ОтветитьSimilar concept: with LED lights around real life cities at night that have replaced soft orange lights. In another generation people will think that wandering around a town at night means being blinded by bright white LED lampposts and headlights (like a sports stadium at night but everywhere). Looking around is painful to the eyes. The warm moody glow of the orange lights are already nearly gone in many cities.
Ответитьhow are they adapting the fw900 to modern GPU without VGA out?
ОтветитьThey should re-produce high quality crt's again on a global scale. Lcd, ips and other can't match the blacks and exactness standardised by crt. Why not re-introduce a product that's proven to have it right ? Lcd, ips appear like the factories are still struggling with light bleed, antracite insted of black, fake labels indicating progress that isn't there think of samsung q-led or g-sync. It's like what 3D was just over a decade ago. Also tnt is one of the few that can resemble crt but the view angles are usually none just sit straight in front. Also their achilles heel is photoshop and anything requiring bright colors. HDR wasn't necessary with CRT I don't see the advantage as it usually presents an artificial coloration. Like bloom-lighting on some games on crt but negatively, like wearing colored sunglasses.
Ответитьno input lag and no need for antialiasing
ОтветитьMan, I got a few CRTs just sitting in my storage unit. I wonder if someone
will discover my unit one day after I am gone and go "OMG!!! CRTs!"
The only problem is that your eyes are tired after several hours of using CRT monitor. While you can spend the whole day using LCD/oled and you will feel fine.
ОтветитьHow does Cyberpunk look on a CRT?
The major downsides I can see is the power draw for the old CRTs and the desk space.
CRT's give a more natural feel. Best way I can compare it is taking a photo on actual film and taking the same picture with a digital camera.
ОтветитьTake care of that vintage CRT because they're not making any more them them.
Ответитьi love this video but i still dont know how to get more than 75hz to the crt
ОтветитьIf I could get a proper ( New) 1080p crt monitor with above 60hz I would def go back. Im on an Asus Tuf VG259QM now and although to me,its as close to a crt you can get,motion blur,anti ghosting wise,it's still not the same. But the asus tuf monitors are getting real close. And a problem nowadays with newer GPU's is also the connection,CRT's use VGA mostly right ? Most GPU's nowadays onloy have hdmi and dp slots.
ОтветитьAnother of those FW900 price inflating videos. And so misleading. We are talking a monitor that costs >2000€
Put this side by side to a Panasonic Viera 42" FullHD that costs 25€ and try to be as optimistic again. First of all, the 22,5" net size fits roughly 4 times in the Panasonic. It weighs twice as much, 40kg vs 20kg.
The Panasonic has a 100% P3 gamut coverage. The CRT barely sRGB.
The Panasonic does 400 nits, the CRT maybe 200.
The Panasonic does 120fps input with 600fps display. The Sony flickrs max 90fps at 1080p.
The Panasonic has RF/Composite/Component/VGA/3xSCART/4xHDMI inputs and does auto select the hot one. The Sony is just VGA. You can't hook up an Atari 2600, you can't hook up a Mega Drive, you can't hook up a PS3, You can't hook up a BR player.
Heck even a Sony Bravia 46W5500 CCFL LCD delivers a way nicer experience.
There's probably a niche waiting for somebody to start a kickstarter startup company manufacturing small volumes of CRTs aimed at hardcore gamers. Because right now, AFAIK nobody in the world is making them any more, and eventually the supply of CRTs left over from when they were made will dry up as they wear out and die. The demand from hardcore gamers will still be there though, creating a niche to be filled.
ОтветитьMy 17" CRT monitor supports the following screen resolutions and refresh rates:
1) 640x480@120Hz (visible area at 16:9 is 640x360);
2) 800x600@120Hz (visible area at 16:9 is 800x450);
3) 960x720@110Hz (visible area at 16:9 is 960x540);
4) 1024x768@100Hz (visible area at 16:9 is 1024x576);
5) 1280x960@90Hz (visible area at 16:9 is 1280x720);
6) 1600x1200@75Hz (visible area at 16:9 is 1600x900);
7) 1920x1440@60Hz (visible area at 16:9 is 1920x1080);
that 200kg 45" where can I get two I'd like half a tonne on my desk
ОтветитьImagine being such a poser that you have to go back to get a CRT LOL. Tools.
ОтветитьMost of CRT supporters are just being nostalgic (or maybe have a cheap TN monitor).
ОтветитьThis video is 3 years old, does anyone know if they are still playing on CRT monitors?
ОтветитьThe reason why it is so hard to find a decent monitor these days. Lots of them are garbage and people can't realize that.
Ответитьthat crt cost 3000 dollars.. you can also get a very good lg oled tv for that price
ОтветитьLol hooked up an old CRT monitor cuz of this video. I think I did it wrong because I'm pretty sure my eyeballs are bleeding😂
ОтветитьThis feels like the weirdest, most nerdy, hipster flex I can imagine. I both approve and cry at the same time. Keep up the good work!
ОтветитьProgressive scan is the cause of input delay, and crts and 1080i has 1 thing in common...they're interlaced. That's also why 1080i can be done through component, and look gorgeous. Theres no input lag on interlaced signals. Progressive scan is the problem, because of the processing(upscaling) overhead that the syncing functionality holds back controller input(input lag) and screen refreshes. Interlaced is the future
ОтветитьGo figure
ОтветитьControl on a 'vintage piece of technology like CRT...y'all who've played the game know why this is hilariously ironic.
ОтветитьHeh... used to have 2 19inch Sony Trinitrons. Was going to build an arcade with one, but ended up tossing them. I wonder if their Sony had visible grill apature lines...
ОтветитьYes, let me just spend $3000 on a used 20 year old CRT 🙄
ОтветитьEven though it looks that good on crt, playing on it for hours on end every day would make you ...let's say environmentally 'green' lol unless they made the Sony CRT differently, then the cathode ray tube is your enemy
ОтветитьI'll stick to my 32" 4K 144hz monitor.
ОтветитьIt better look good for $3000
ОтветитьMine is a CPD-1425, made in 1994. I am watching this on it now.
ОтветитьI recently decided to play my older Superslim model ps3 again on my more modern screen, I was taken aback by how much worse the games looked than I remember they used to; aliasing was very high and the colours over-saturated and uneven; then I remembered older games were not designed for modern screens. They have a much higher default settings: Contrast/Sharpness, and saturation. I turned it down and it looked so much improved. Modern screens were not considered when making some of these earlier games like Demon's Souls; the creators used the resolution to blend colours and hide textures. I always play most older games at 720p; they just don't look right otherwise in my opinion. Same with emulation too...
Ps3 settings are incredibly important too depending on your setup
The Sony FW900 was even back then in 2003 very hard to find and if you got one, it was freaking expensive.
Now it costs (used) more than new OLED 4k monitor. I still don't understand how you can charge $3000 for this old technology...it's not worth it, belive me.
Idc what anyone says. From experience the c2 is by far better quality than ANY crt could ever put out.
Ответитьcan you guys put out some sort of guide to this? It´s kinda impossible to find Sony FW900. What other models would also be good? Any crt rgb monitor? Samsung syncmaster would be a good choice? What about converters and adapters?
ОтветитьJust stumbled across this video, and am a huge fan of CRT, for classic games. I currently have 2 flatscreen CRTs from the early 2000’s, that have S-video input. The picture quality is amazing on Neo Geo, N64, and Saturn. By the way, if you are the same Richard that worked on Sega Saturn Magazine, it’s great to see you again! I still have the entire 37 issue run of that excellent magazine!
ОтветитьWhat a lot of people seem to not realize is that CRT is a lot more similar to OLED than LCD. Parts of the screen/image that are black aren't lit up, just like OLED. There is more bleeding to adjacent areas than with OLED, but it still makes for extremely good contrast compared to even very good LCDs.
ОтветитьSONY outstanding...
ОтветитьI have always said this for years. Its flatscreen makers still refuse to make refresh rates that go beyond 60-75hz.
ОтветитьJust got my FW900 yesterday. Oh boy.
Ответить
