Why is she worried about harassment. This is exactly the kind of mentality we are trying to get away from. Worrying about what people might say. Periods are a natural process. There's no shame if anyone comes to know about it. I've openly discussed periods with my manager.

Then educate the harassers rather than depriving women of such leaves that some of them might actually need.

Some 40% women who don't have pain it's fine.. what about the 60% .. who can't even standup due to that pain and can't sit for long die to heavy flow?? Does she know that pain? Is she a women? Just set strict rules to not discuss and control social media? What will happen if that's known to people? Don't they all have a mother or sister at home??

Disgusting thought process of this woman minister...what would happen if the entire world would know when I menstruate...if I am being harassed than the people harassing should be tutored...not the other way round.

I might sound really rude but here's the thing, if you have really bad period pain which does not alllow you to do your everyday work, you should visit a gynaecologist, when I was in school, i used to have really bad period pain for which I had fainted a number of times,i went to a doctor and realised that it was for my unhealthy eating habits. Having extreme period pain is not normal.

Secondly, if women start getting paid leaves every month, the private sector will hire less women, the corporate sector is cruel and it does not care about your pain, and I'm sure everybody knows the competition in the corporate sector ,wouldn't a employer choose a man who comes to work everyday over a woman who takes paid leaves every month? I know what they do is inhumane but that's how things work out in the real world.

❤❤❤❤❤❤👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍🤝🤝🤝 This should come from women themselves. Well done. Absurd. Men makes such mandate believing that it's going to please women and there are women who fight for a right for the wrong reasons. They don't have any idea what freedom means for women. They simply don't understand that and even if they do they would argue for it just because their political party thinks so.

Deserved person should get the leaves, am referring to women or men who have health issues. For a woman who suffers from period issues due to endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, PCOD or any kind uterus issues, having dysmenorrhea, should be given leaves. It's not by the cost of a woman's or a man's health ,an economy should grow.
What's wrong in saying a word 'period', it's not AIDS or sex or lust to cover up. It's sad to even comment on this.

Paid leaves are meant to be used when needed. Why add additional leaves for period and keep paid leaves for encashment? You are also allowed to take unpaid leaves if you have fully utilised paid leaves. As a woman working in pvt sector, i don't support menstruation leaves. It will negatively affect women's hiring in companies.
When women in private sector can manage it, why should only women in government sector get these leaves? What makes them so different from rest of the women?

You are unwell because of major cramps or heavy bleeding, you report sick - maybe the government can pass a bill for such women. I am a woman. Never saw the need to tell the world about my (horribly painful) periods or the problems. Dont like it. We scream equality and find a reason to demand special treatment.
Companies will simply not hire women if they feel they are going to be high maintenance. As it is people are shocked to see the number of holidays we get in our country.
My parents generation, they worked more, complained less and were a thousand times more functional in their emotional, social, and professional areas than we can be - because they did their jobs instead of finding reasons. Again - for genuine cases, perhaps the government can make such leaves possible.. Just my take. Don't expect anyone to agree and not meant as an offense🙏.

I used to work on govt office..our principal was male..and he was kind...there was a system is that school (though not legal) for years that women on MC can take a paid one day leave..and one female senior staff was in charge to count and manage the leave... but honestly speaking initially one year we took the leave on need..but then we almost all misued the leave like friend's mehendi ceremony, blood test, electric bill payment etc etc. Now I really feel ashamed about that lying..but its true that if such leave exists many many people will use for personal other works

Firstly there is nothing wrong with Men getting to know that women are on periods.
Secondly there is no shame or harassment in telling that you want leave basis periods because you are not feeling well. People need to evolve and understand. This can not be a hush hush topic in a progressive India.

We dont need to agree with Smriti Irani against our interest and well being. Lets first understand that equality is not equal. Equality means enabling a person or community in a way that it can participate in the economy equally. It is pointless to be afraid of back-biters.
And lets stop acting silly! Leaves can always not be taken.

Many people in the comments have misunderstood it... She has only told that it won't be wise enough to mandate those leaves... Every body is different, as we all know... Some may not have much severity during menstruation, some may have... More importantly, in case anyone (irrespective of gender) is having any kind of health issues (even if severe periods pain for some females), there's paid/unpaid leaves that they can opt for... Depending upon the severity they can decide...

i think there not a problem of harassment coz the person who thinks this is funny or can make fun out of this let them he the same feeling with the electronic device and see how that artificial cramp feel so in their life they will never forget what it takes to be women and i think awareness about it is necessary and even in past i think in bengal they used to celebrate girls first period so i mean are we evolving and if yes they people should be alright with knowing ok this girl has her period cycle on this time and i should respect her and care her during that period 😊

Arrey aunty! Your premise is that menstruation (it's dates, presence and absence ) is a matter of shame and something that should be hidden because it is immoral and gendered and not a normal women's health situation. So what if my HR guy, accounts guy knows my menstrual days. What will happen if they do? Why would I get harrassed if gender laws are implemented in a private sector where maternity leaves are already in place. Bhaang kha ke aayi ho kya jhooth ki raani smriti Irani?

I think she is making sense. I work for a private institution and some women already claim less work n privileges in the name of menstrual cycle and it's difficulties. Sometimes it's put frwd in an awkward manner. And like someone rightly mentioned, men will be chosen over women if it happens. So don't make it a big deal.

If talking about menses is so shameful itself, when can she rise to the level of becoming a sanyasi EVER? Its unnecessary debate what Mrn can do and what women cannot do in a general society... The more one is empowered, the more one has to GROW RESPONSIBLE... Not find excuses that anything is a shame or harassment. Show one marriage in India where either the husband or wife isnt suffering? When both are suffering, the debate has no meaning.. Just gibe up superstitions and become more educated to develop a TRUE BALANCE OF MIND as much as possible between society/work and oneself... That is what religion is for..
