Sometime I wonder what could have happend to Europe if Germany hadn't been seduced by the nutjobs that were Willy II. and that Moustache Guy.

This division was a waste of potentially good quality volunteer NCO material. It took twice as long to field as army panzer divisions destroyed at Stalingrad, it lasted only two months in combat and never recovered. Albert Speer likened its destruction to the wasteful "kindermord" of university students in 1914. Other divisions in Normandy did not get such potentially high quality human material or so long a preparation. Like other Reich-raised W-SS panzer divisions raised in 1943-44, it took a long time to prepare behind a shield of exhausted and little rested army panzer divisions who were struggling to hold the front. Their manpower could probably have been better used sooner by the Army.

I remember Erich Rupprecht as a PZ IV tanker in the 12 SS PZ Division, aged 14 in 1944 !
Captured in the Ardennes in December, he joined the Foreign Legion for 20 years (Indochina 46/54 Algeria 55/62).
Died in France in the 90's.

"Panzer" Meyer was considered a moron and militarily ineptt by the german commanders and officers who fought alongside him. He was also the man who famously lost 6 panthers in 6 minutes to the Canadians. He had no formal miilitary education - having come up through the original SS and was, at best, an enthuastic amateur, responsible for multiple war crimes that earned him a death sentence that was, sadly, commuted. He was only one step above Dirlewanger in his conduct and stupidity. The western allies should have handed him over to the soviets - whose people suffered his worst atrocities - so they could deal with him.

Something else that should also be mentioned. The training of the allies was lacking compared to the members of the 12th SS and other divisions. Many were trained by veterans of the east front, this type of training was real compared to the allies. Not to mention the equipment.

The Americans in Normandy took a number of Waffen SS Hitlerjugend soldiers prisoner, their young age shocked the Americans to such an extent that after taking their weapons from them, they ordered them to run away, they did not know yet that they were the most fanatical and devoted to Nazi ideas young people, who were not so generous towards the Prisoner of War, whom they often killed on the spot!

It's a shame that Germans don't show respect for the fallen of ww2. Dispite what the fighting was over most men just served their country. That was it. They didn't benifit. It's like America holding all white people responcable for what a few did wrong. Never mind the white northern army who gave there lives so other could also be free 😢

This soldier had to spend four years as a prisoner. Perhaps he was investigated for war crimes, such as the murder of the Canadian prisoners at Normandy. In any case, spending the years from 19-22 years of age in a cage must have been tiresome.

I was told that the actions of this Hitler Youth Division were foolish and wasteful. Their military tactics and actions caused multiple deaths to their own due to poor decision making. The allies just mowed them down.
