Tesla, GM, and Other Automakers Are All Reluctant To Say No To Deep Sea Mining - But What Is It?

In order to transition the world's fleet away from fossil fuels and toward cleaner, greener, and more equitable solutions, we need more battery materials.

But just as the industry is experimenting with new battery chemistries that use materials that are easier to source and require fewer... problematic extraction methods and human rights violations, there's a new kid on the block that promises the holy grail of more lithium, cobalt, and little consequences to boot...

At least, as long as you're not an Ocean creature - because the new source of all of these raw minerals and metals is the deep sea, and the materials are extracted using a very, very destructive process.

So why then did Tesla recently suggest its shareholders vote against a proposal to execute a moratorium on deep-sea mining? And why are GM and other automakers equally skirmish about swearing off deep-sea-mined minerals?
