I hate that it's on us to survive even though we didn't cause this. Why isn't loblaws being asked to help us survive inflation?

The fact that companies make record profits, pay their employees low and then ask for a TIP when I'm doing all the work myself is repulsive! I never TIP! You want a tip? Pay your workers more. There's my free tip for you!

The Canadian and provincial governments are supposed to be the leaders of our country. They are doing nothing to help Canadians fight this. We need more competition in the markets. Stop protecting Canadian corporations who don't need the special treatment and allow more competition. The governments are useless.

Excellent piece as per usual Market Place. Here in Jamaica, these restaurants and service providers put tip, gratuity and service charge on your bill. So even if you attempt to jump through hoops to opt out of tipping, you're hit with a service charge even if you have ordered take-out..unbelievable. I mean if they don't package the food for e.g.; how will you get it, typically service charge would be if you are dining. Now its automatic most places once you place an order.

I imagine in most instances that waiters don't actually get these monies. So, where persons want to show their appreciation for the service, they tend to discretely slip actual cash to the waiters. But then you are still gonna be hit with a service charge. So personally my family and I have drastically scaled back on dining out experiences.

Every time Doug opens his mouth he expects money to go into it from somewhere.. I wouldn't be surprised if MarketPlace had to pay him for this interview!! Then everything that comes out of his mouth is just garbage and smells of corruption. This guy needs to go just for the things he said in this interview, it's just the tip of the ignorant iceberg that's Doug.. Just wait till he tells you how he feels about education!! being a politician is like being a legal criminal.. his politicians honestly belong in jail

Once again, the CBC ignoring the elephant in the room. The 3 causes of food inflation are Trudeau's deficits, Trudeau's money printing, and Trudeau's carbon tax.

As a person with a masters in economics, I saw this coming and started warning people when our government created, literally out of thin air, $4 trillion and moved it into a stale economy. Anyone with half a brain could see it would be massively inflationary. So was I, a normal person with a economics degree, smarter than every single person in the entire Federal Reserve put together, or did they know what was going to happen and they still went forward with it and lied to world. Those are the only two options.

An unbiased discussion of the Government asking the Bank of Canada to print or create with quantitative easing 300+ billion dollars and the huge deficits that mean an astounding amount of interest being paid by taxpayers would be helpful. Understanding how this affects inflation is a basic lesson in finances.

Inflation, bank collapse, severe drought in the agricultural belt, recession, food shortages, diesel fuel and heating oil shortages, baby formula shortages, available automobile shortages and prices, the price of living place. <It's all coming together and it could lead to a real disaster towards the end of this year (or sooner). With inflation currently at about 6%, my primary concern is how to maximize my savings/retirement fund of about $300k which has been sitting duck since forever with zero to no gains.

The middle east and Russia got together and decided that next year they would reduce the global oil supply by 2 million barrels per year to force the price higher. This was a public announcement.

This is artificial supply, and false scarcity.

This recession is most likely the result of an external factor. For the first time in decades, the United States is losing its clout as a federal reserve currency. They don't have any more economies to use to control inflation, and less money is being spent on stock and oil trading than in the past. They all lend support to the idea that a new multilateral world order is in the works.

Feel sorry for both sides. Unfortunately, people decide where they want to work. Working in the service industry for 29 years, its the risk you take when working on this industry. If I git great service I dont mind, however it shoukd be optional.

How to survive inflation: steal back what is owed to you.

I have zero sympathy for all the retail theft happening now. They brought it on themselves. It’s about survival now by any means necessary. This is now necessary.

Dumpster-Diving and Donating expired/expiring food MUST BE DECRIMINALIZED by Congress so groceries and restaurants can feel free to donate their surplus/expiring food without being threatened by liability

Canada needs rent control, there should be a cap on maximum rent increase allowed per year.
Instead of increasing mortgage rates throughout, canada should only increase them for investment properties. People with single home mortgages that they live in, should not have change in mortgage prices. Moreover, Canada needs to reduce new home construction prices for the next at least 3 years. Reduce permit fees, land acquisition fees, limit developer margins to a reasonable %.
Current policies are killing Canadian economy, migration needs to slow down a little for next 2 years, and housing and production needs to be pumped up! Plus its crucial that we increase minimum wage by at least 2$ an hour! Canada right now.. is the 3rd world country to 1st world countries!
You can't run a family with a single fulltime job with base income at all! After tax you make about 2500 ish dollars and if your partner can't work, good luck keeping roof on your head!

Regarding shopping by unit.pricing. It is considerably more economical to buy larger quantities but the struggling families don't have the cash flow to do so or the means to get a 10lb bag of potatoes home on the bus with there other groceries. The poor are penalized across the monopolistic pricing strategies in Canadian grocery stores. Even with competition it's hard to cross shop grocery stores when you are working 2 - 3 jobs. Lastly, the product they are selling are not healthy so the cost on our health care system and ultimately the tax payer subsidizes there lack of ethics. I have never had dinner or shot a round of golf with Galen Weston but I guarantee you that Trudeau has. We have the fox in the chicken coop!!!

how to survive inflation...... TAX THE RICH.

Why are we encouraging here to starve and be "clever" about surviving when we all know we could tax Canada's billionaires and it would sort out everything? WHAT ARE WE DOING!?!?!?

And CBC.... shame on you for putting this crap out like it's a good solution. You should be arguing for the taxation of the rich the most.

Shame.

It's tough on USA seniors on a fixed income. I don't eat out or buy liqueur but I do buy organic foods for our health. I cook from scratch at home three meals a day, seven days a week. Our healthy foods and grass-fed beef now costs us $1,050 per month. We no longer have cable TV, our second vehicle, or a SmartPhone. No vacations, no trips.
