Vocal Resonance ~ Resonant vs. Not Resonant (Example)

I would have just assumed she was pushing/straining. Is it possible to push your voice but still retain placement, and therefore resonance? Or do you have to fully support a note for it to be resonant? Is it possible to support but not be resonant?

Whilst Mariah obviously has the far superior voice and technique, it is impossible for a sound to not be resonant. It isn't this elusive resonance everyone talks about, it is just reverb on the microphone and Mariah's overall more supported and on pitch sound. Nicki had resonance, every sound in the world does. She was just off pitch and strained as well as had terrible placement.

Mariah had the support and held the note effortlessly ..she knows breath contol and did not run out of air holding the note..she mentally landed on the note by thinking down into the note ..Niki reached for the note. You can feel the tension in the way her tone was produced..she ran out of air at the end of phrase and her voice fell back into her throat ..also...sounds like something was tight/constricted ..the front of her mouth was very open but the back of her mouth produced more edge than open(lack of ballance of the vocal register. She was tense and it came through the sound...something she did cut of the air bringing tension to her voice and producing shrill tone...vibrato will help to keep that voice from tirring and loosing vitality. Niki does have a beautiful voice , just needs to make a few adjustments..physically and mentally
