Toby was an interesting and underrated character. Like sometimes you thought that you would buy him a lapdance or do something to really try to break him out of his shell, and other times you would avoid making eye contact if you accidentally spotted him on a weekend

Toby's character is so beautifully drawn. He's "nice" but there's something about him that can still rub you the wrong way. It's his weakness, his lack of self-confidence, his wheedling and over ingratiating way of trying to be part of things, and as later episodes reveal, kind of a creepy, dark underside to him. I worked with a guy like Toby who was this beta male middle manager who a lot of people in the office subtly picked on and bullied and I felt sorry for him until I got to know him better and saw how passive aggressive and oily he was underneath his facade of "niceness". Toby doesn't deserve Michael's treatment of him but there is something about him that triggers Michael in every way and not all of it is necessarily on Michael.
