What’s really fascinating to me is that this guys are brilliant at rationalising everything they take as truth in the bible which is nothing more than a brilliantly written novel . I am truly stupefied every time l see people of this intellectual level investing all their energy in a story book that was meant to keep people in more primitive time in line. People may be smart and brilliant but if they don’t use their common sense, they just waste their whole life justifying the myth created by ‘smart ‘ people of that era meant to manage simple people of that time. So for gods sake, yes ur common sense is your window to escape from this medieval prison.

I love the argument that we are putting todays morals on something that happened thousands of years ago. I didn't really understand that gods morals changed over time. That back then impregnating a 12yo or having your believers commit genocide was ok but not now. Cool guy. cool hobby.

He forgets that God told Abraham that the pagan nations in the land were given 400 years to repent and change their wicked ways.

Abraham was the prophet that went amongst and before them telling them about the righteousness of the only true existing GOD.

so when Joshua comes on the scene at the end of the 400 Year Period and people have not changed their practices.

just like with cancer.... you have to cut it out.

God cut out the wickedness (which is his right to do)
so that his nation that he was establishing would not be so polluted.

unfortunately the Israelites did not clear out the land of or wickedness and so fell into sin themselves.

There's also the condition of death to consider...
for us to bring death is an abomination.

but for God to bring death when he can restore life, it is merely removing a piece from off the board, like in chess.

with Jesus death he paid for all sins.

so all the wicked people God had the Israelites remove from the land will be coming back in the Resurrection on Earth.

they'll be given a second chance to obey God Almighty.

if they choose not to, then they are granted permanent death.

this is why it is called a Resurrection of judgement.

Alex,
The story of Jonah is there in the Bible for a reason. God sending His prophet to a heathen nation ' calling them to repentance. The Bible doesn't record every single nations detailed history but the implication is that everyone would have gotten a chance to know what is right or mend their ways before God's judgements.
Also, in Genesis it says God will judge the Canaanite nation once their sins reaches its fulness. Also, He tells Israel in Deuteronomy that He is using Israel as an instrument of judgement on those nations.
Those nations would have gotten many chances to change ( it's just not recorded there).
Again if God can give an evil nation like Nineveh a chance to change. You can imply that He gives everyone a chance as one of His nature is " He is just ".
God is so much more merciful to every one before He brings His judgements on them.

Cliffe states that hyperbole is being used in the bible. Guess that ends his position that the bible is the inerrant word of God. He claims that 'all those people that were wiped out appear in the next book'. Almost like it never happened the way the bible says. Then Cliffe rambles on and on and doesn't say much. But he does correctly state that there are consequences to his actions that affect his children and his grandchildren. Isn't the same position of an atheist with just one less god? I, for one, am tired of Christians telling me what a terrible person I am because some guy 6000 years ago ate a piece of fruit. We are all better than that.

"It was actually a much more gracious genocide because they didn't rape them like others would have..."

Keep in mind that this was just said by a grown human being in the modern era. He thinks it was a sign of morality that they only slaughtered them, no raping afterwards.

Of course I'm not sure what he thinks it meant to take the women for "plunder" in this case... but perhaps it's best not to know.

If God did order to kill anyone, then you don't have the obligation to justify it to anybody, if you are a believer. That's God. The creator of heavens and the earth. The creator of you! Who in the universe knows better than him? Does any believer can claim he knows better than his creator?

So these questions of non-believers will not be satisfied as they don't believe in a creator and that their ultimate source of what is good and evil is only themselves.

This is why God in the first place prohibits eating the fruit of knowledge of good and evil. Because humans can't handle it as they have mortal and limited mind. They thought that all goodness and evilness are within their grasp and own standards.

They are quick to forget that God, as a great creator, is also a great destroyer.

lol hyperbole is the magic word in the religious world to avoid to agreed with the real truth. Why the bible, the WORD OF GOD is not totally clear for everybody in the world. NOPE, it need of the theologians to INTERPRET GODS DESIRES. From that moment the text become corrupted by the translators: to translate is to betrayed.

Only after I quit reading the bible for 5 years and started reading philosophy, literature, poetry (things not welcome in the religious world) I started wondering about the present genocide crimes today. Then it came like a flash: WOW, THE BIBLE IS FULL OF GENOCIDE, THE WHOLE OLD TESTAMENT, justifying why ISRAEL IS THE CHOSEN ONE over other nations that need it to be obliterated.

You have to understand the times to judge the action. If you look at the stories, it is no different from any other conquering nation. If you oppose, you die. If you do not obey, you get punished. But then Jesus came, and he changed the world. It is through His teachings that we find wrong in the actions of the past. If He didn't teach and died on the cross, what would world standards look like today? You have to see the relevance that it is human nature to do and be evil. For years after Christ, these practices still took place. Our way of seeing and judging what is wrong wasn't accepted as wrong at the time. How privileged we are that the Messiah came when he did for our world would be completely different today if he didn't. This conversation would probably not have been possible without some sort of punishment. He died for all of us. Now, acceptance is where our salvation lies. God judges, Jesus will come to Judge. Who, why, when, and where will be answered then. For you can not ask man why God does what he does and did what he did.

"It's hyperbole" is such a blatant cop out because they know the actual text is impossible to defend without sounding like an insane person. Bringing up prostitution in the same breath as putting children to death for where they were born is obscene and amoral

I'm no biblical scholar, but I think both atheist and theist alike continually overlook something.... If the human soul lives on forever, a nation of ppl killing another nation of ppl isn't really the same level than if you're ending their existence. You're just moving them from this life to the next but you truly believe they live on.
