And Man in the middle attack (MITM) basically is that a hacker is sitting in the middle between you and a website and waits for the connection for you to obtain a website's certificate. Then it splits the connection in two and substitutes original certificate with the one that he can then decrypt. Thus you are encrypting data with a malicious certificate and an attacker will send the same data to the website.

Note: it is very simplified explanation
