Keep in mind. Im not so much recomending the AFM models. Mainly the LS based Chevy trucks. The 4.8 engine does not have AFM.
But even AFM beats the hell out of a Triton 5.4.
Doesn't matter how good the engine is if the body rusts out from under it like those Chevys do here in the Midwest.
ОтветитьI hate the way they look so plain but they do last an r very reliable!
ОтветитьI just bought this same truck, 2011, 4dr 4wd, 295k miles, fresh trans, runs awesome, afm turned off with obd port device. Perfect for my Ocean camping trips for what I paid for it ..
ОтветитьStuck lifters can be unstuck without pulling the heads. Plenty of info on YT. Just check the cam lobe, turn off the AFM, and keep on driving.....
ОтветитьWhat I would worry nost about is if you had to replace a heater core or air conditioner condensor . Its way into the dash and alott of work .
ОтветитьThese trucks get better fuel economy every year as more and more of the cab, bed, and front fenders rot away starting at 2 years old lol. This is NOT the best truck out there. It's a turd, like most everything GM has put out for the last few decades.
ОтветитьYou told everyone not to buy one of these cause the active fuel management sucks now you're saying how good it is don't get this nonsense
ОтветитьYou obviously don't live in Michigan its too clean lol 🤣 and yes motors in newer trucks get the miles but what good is it if salt eats the truck away 😂
ОтветитьLove my 08. It’s a dream to perform at home maintenance. Only thing is I don’t like the stock horn placement. Hope this body style eventually becomes the new square body
ОтветитьOne of the ugliest too. I hate the body, headlight on this generation.
Ответить2013 silvarado 5.3 had to be replaced at 102k miles. $6,000. for new engine. 2 lifters went bad at 75k miles warrenty covered repair. The truck lost all oil pressure at 102k and mechanic said main bearing oil journals were ruined and new engine required. Very well maintained oil changes and driven by adults. New engine has ran 30k with no problems. Transmission fluid changed at 100k. Must have just been the rare bad engine. Oil pressure sensor on back of engine cjanged 4 times but goes out each time. Need to replace sending unit with another type of gage. Even with it out mechanic said low oil pressure would be shown on dash in event of pump failure by secondary warning. Dont know about that.
ОтветитьWhat’s your thoughts about 4.8 ? Or 5.3 better engine ?
ОтветитьMaybe if it's not diesel I bought a 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500 diesel fuel injection engine. It ran and started good didn't have much rust. But it died in a parking lot shop replaced the fuel pump but that only got us home that they changed me $1,200.00. I have to replace all the fuel line under the truck.
ОтветитьI have an 08 Tahoe, 112k miles. I love it
ОтветитьWhy does this series from 07-13 have evap problems ??? I have tried everything!
ОтветитьMy '09 Silverado Z71 works great. About 140K miles. Some AFM problems seem to be oil pressure related. I read a post on another thread supposedly from a guy who worked with the company that had the original contract for the lifters that GM shopped for cheaper prices in 2009, and the original mfgr lost it. He thought the contract was shipped overseas. MY '09 came with rear discs and the 6L80. If it fails I'll have the engine rebuilt right. I love that truck. Use GOOD oil, and change it, and filter, regularly, at no more than 5K miles. It's the best insurance you can buy.
ОтветитьIt's kind of funny the truck that you're looking at there doesn't have the hydro boost brake system looks like it's vacuum for what I can see in your photos. But there's another issue that comes up time after time after time after time again.
ОтветитьThat's funny you're talking about the water pump I manage a fleet of Chevys for a company they are work vehicles. One of the areas that come up non-stop are water pumps failing. We don't have very good luck with ours. We had Ford vans that used to have the four sixes in them and those tended to have no issues. Chevy always has something going wrong doesn't have to be the engine. The back doors on the vans are so flimsy they break all the time The clips for opening the side doors off the latches break all the time we have numerous problems with coil packs failing just a list of stuff. One of the Ford bands we had head over 200,000 miles on it and the only thing I did to it was a starter.
ОтветитьCar Wizard - you have stated several times that 99-06 Silverado/Sierra is the best. Why lie?
ОтветитьThes half tons have the best frame and structure in 09 they came with an allison based 6l80e which is bulletproof when serviced the frame has actually been put into the 3/4 ton and one ton even today its fully boxed front to back this is the ticket folks
Ответить2013 Tahoe 5.3 v8 244778 miles. What issues have pissed me off well only the door handles which are the worst design ever. Got to change the dirverside front and rear today again. Fail they will for sure. Beside that just rountive jobs oil changes plugs wires brakes and tires I can say you can drive in Mass where the speed limit is 100 mph no its 65 but no one drives less than 90 and I feel like I am driving a datxun 240 z thats how good they ride. Dont be a sucker and buy a ford or dodge your be sorry Buy a Chevy 350 or the 5.3 and do the deal oil changes and maintence and away you go. Best Trucks ever
ОтветитьAnd yes for all of u that say there not ls motors grow up the diffrence is the meterial the engine is made of infact the truck motor is stronger then the car motor because its cast iron and not aluminum tgey can take the same hp if not more u can bolt any ls part onto that motor so i agree with heavy d its bacicly an ls i will day to that one apears to be an aluminum block and heads my 02 is cast iron same block as the 6.0 mine is a 5.3 the diffrences is very small between the ls and the truck motor
ОтветитьThis year duramax is a nightmare to work on.
ОтветитьMy father bought a 2002 Sierra 1500 extended cab 2WD with the 4.8L brand new for around $24,000. It was a reliable truck except for when the engine blew up at 40,000 miles due to a defective cylinder head. Powertrain Warranty was 3 years 36,000 miles but the dealer he bought it from ended up splitting the repair cost with him which they didn't have to do. They rebuilt the engine and he never had problems with the engine after that.
ОтветитьChevy rust bucket mine rusted away ….frame ..fuel lines ..brake lines …and every other metal part !!!!!
ОтветитьExcept the oil pressure sensor. Just replaced mine. Holy hell.
ОтветитьI know this video is a year or so old but I just discovered The Wizard. Question for anyone. Can I replace that oil cooler plug gasket by the filter without losing oil? I just changed oil on my 05. Don't want to waste it.
ОтветитьGm ruined a great engine with that fuel management system. My buddy deleted it and went from 15 to 16 mpg.
ОтветитьThe 5.3 is tough. But the cv axles, front end and bearings don't last.
ОтветитьOk Mr. Wizard I have a question. Is there anything I can do to extend the life of the evap core on these Silverado's? I have an 05 that this issue has frustrated the snot out of me and makes me not want to buy another. That being said I have found a pristine 09 5.3 - .5ton 4 x4 with trailer package with 94K on it ($15K) vs. a pristine 98 7.4 .75 ton 2wd with 85K($9,600) I am pulling an 8k fifth wheel. Which would you you pursue? I appreciate your honest videos.
ОтветитьMm. Second gen tundra
ОтветитьIs this really a 5.3 4 cylinder?
ОтветитьMy 08 dropped a lifter and the frame rotted after 10 yrs
ОтветитьThat wheel cylinder has been leaking back drivers side .
ОтветитьWhat is so great about an LS engine? That’s all I hear like it’s a new fad. LS swap LS swap LS swap
ОтветитьGeeze..three years ago you did a video on what used trucks to buy and you said not to buy any chevy or gmc 2007 and later...so what changed in two years??
ОтветитьAre transmissions not a problem???
Ответитьis this a half ton?
ОтветитьI was looking for a "nice" truck a few years ago, and got almost the same exact truck, except in 2WD. Great truck, now going strong at 150k on it
ОтветитьI hear 2012 is a good year. How are they in comparison?
ОтветитьI admin a half dozen GM truck forums and GM themselves call it a LS based Vortec Truck Engine. The argument itself is silly.
ОтветитьI was told to put the active fuel management delete chip on my '09 to stop the engine from shutting down 4 cyclinders, to save the top end from damaging valve lifters. I hope it helps.
ОтветитьGMT-800s are the best generation, followed by the GMT-400 platform IMO.
ОтветитьOwned multiple and also drove GM company trucks and found the pre AFM 6.0 LQ4 also the LQ9 to be my favorite. One was the workhorse and one was a little more fun. The 4.8 was a dog but just kept on running. Had some 5.3's that were runners but they never really got me too excited.
ОтветитьI have a 2008 just replaced all front suspension parts because the smart people use plastic in those parts to shave weight and cost also replace the headlights 3 times on driver side finally put in leds .
ОтветитьI bought a WT 2009 4.3v6 with 44000 on it in 2013 . It has more room in the bay about 2 feet.😊
