Just be careful mate. I spent the 90s and 00s in Asia, working in Manila, Jakarta and Bangkok. I was in my 40s and 50s. I met a lot of “retiree expats”. They were doing ok and having fun at 60, although most of the ones I met had been ripped off, sometimes multiple times.

It all sounds fun. Bars, nightclub, pretty girls, cheap food, cheap cigarettes cheap taxis and accommodation.

The reality could be very different. Asia wasn’t the safest of places back then, and it still has its problems.

There were as many coups as democratic elections, I never knew what tomorrow would bring. Tanks of the streets, Generals on the TV news, hurried explanations from strangers. I was in Jakarta in 98 when to quote Lee Kwan Yew “the entire fabric of the nation collapsed”. 10,000 students rioted, 1000 people were trapped in burning buildings, the police shot at the rioters, the army shot at the police. I was trying to do a deal and ignore government pleas to get on the last aircraft out. The deal fell apart.

Natural disasters were a common occurrence. I was in Manila in 95 when Typhoon Angela hit. 96,000 houses were destroyed and 1000 people killed in a few hours. I have seen flooding so bad it was terrifying to watch entire inner-city villages disappear in minutes. Standing helplessly as people wash to their death.

Corruption and crime was ever present. Boys would step out of the shadows waving knives. Your maid would steal your watch and say “bad spirits did it”. You GF would take you to some bar, get you drunk then stand there while a bunch of her brothers friends try to mug you. Everyone shook you down for money. Police saw you as a walking ATM. Mid morning break time? They would pull over a white man and hassle cash off him. Park your car on the street and some junior thug would turn up and tell you hell will “look after it” – for a fee. Don’t pay and the tyres are flat or the window smashed.

Health and safety were a huge issue. Most travellers spent days clutch stomachs in the bathroom – if they were lucky. Don’t drink the water. Don’t eat some foods. Girls with every disease known to man. Typhus. TB. Lice. Bed bugs.

All fun in your 20s and 30s, liveable in you 40s and 50s, but hard going in your 60s and 70s. I regularly met those “retiree expats” who were in mess. Health had gone. They needed surgery and were begging for money to get back to the UK and the NHS. One died alone in a cheap boarding house in Bogor. He suffered from malnutrition, he had given his UK passport as security for loan, he was behind in his rent, and no one even wanted the body.

Be aware of what you re getting into.

hi eddy why heven't you talk about health issue in south east asia ..what if you were to get ill or need hospital treatment which you may have to stay in hospital for a while ..which can be very expensive issue..you not going to get free admission for hospital care in thailand or cambodia. as you would here in england..i hope you dont go back in drinking often in thailand..other wise you will be looking for health problem in asia,

I have been married for 24 years to my Thai missus we have a house on Roiet I wanted to retire there my mindset has changed same as my wife we will spend December until May there instead of living there and avoiding the bad weather in the UK . I was privileged to go there in the early 90s until my last visit which was 6 years ago

In a few years time, I am hoping to retire in Malaysia preferably in KL. I did think about Thailand or Indonesia as my second option but Malaysia seems best for me. However, I do absolutely love Thailand - amazing country.
Thankfully I've been teetotal all my life and live healthy which is very important. I'm a firm believer in staying healthy and fit. My fitness keeps me young and active even though I'm in my 50s myself

Hi Eddie ive lived in thailand 12 yrs you need to quit the holiday mode and look at as your home and just live a normal life yeah go out meet friends what ever but not every night just live like you are in the UK thats what i do and use the local clinics if your sick

I left Pattaya 2 days ago and boy was it just bearable. For the first time I actually felt a sence of gratitude when allowed to leave without trouble. First 3 weeks were ok but nothing to brag about. One massage shop nasty as it already was refused to fix the a/c. Arrogance! I found a good dirty massage shop in soi 12 Jomtien which gave any and everything asked for 1970's prices but they never cleaned anything not even the toilet.
An Indian guy opened a laundromat on Pattaya Klang and does massage shop towel services now. Sheets are still dirty day to week to month though.
Anyhow the last month it got so boring i regularly hung around cops for conversation. Thai woman cannot handle a decent chat. Navy bar Pattaya Klang? Den of Thieves and they drug drinks too.

More than half the men from walking street to N.Pattaya road are Indian or Pakistani. Near half all sit down restaurants from beach road area to 3rd road are Indian.

It’s simple Mathematics. It’s not hard to find a nice place in Vietnam, Cambodia or Thailand for $400 a month Including untilities. So at $1000 a month , you’ve got $20 a day for food & drinks , if you’re cooking half your meals & not feeding a local whore & her extended family & paying their bills …$1000 a month is easily done. $1500 and your living well. But if you’re a desperate & dateless deluded idiot that gets roped into feeding a whore & her friends at upscale restaurants……..you better take some excess cash along.
And …unfortunately SE Asia is full of suckers that get rinsed of everything & then limp back home looking for a job.
