how do i make it character driven when my protagonist is the leader of a special black ops team that's sent on various missions? How is it possible when the plot (or something out of their control like a higher up) sends him on a mission of some sort? How do i overcome this dilemma?

Question: Ready player one was rated a 7.4 on IMBD and was praised for it's spectacular visuals and nostalgic references. But the Amazing spiderman was rated a 6.9. and had one of the best visuals of spiderman with POV SHOTS OF SWINGING AROUND THE CITY. I think sometimes pacing and dialogue could have been better but overall was still great. It's funny how Spiderman was the greatest story versus a film that isn't and won awards. Any thoughts on this?

How To Train Your Dragon, through and through. Hiccup is one of the very few protagonists who made it to be my favourite character in their own story, and if you liked the films I highly recommend for you to watch the series Race To The Edge, played between the first and second parts. It's truly a work of genius.

Is the "Foundation" saga character-driven? A totally brilliant story written by Isaac Asimov....

I like your videos, as I have learned a lot from them. However, although I agree with you about Ready Player One, I disagree with you about The Amazing Spiderman. The characters were too convoluted, with too many feelings all over the place. Between the two movies, I agree that The Amazing Spiderman is more character-driven than Ready Player One, but it is not a good example of it. Maybe if we didn't know so much about Spider-man and his origin story, I might have agreed more. Of course, this is just my opinion, and I still love your videos. Please keep them up.

Gladly found your analysis on this topic (3 years later 😅). Ready Player One was too heavily promoted by the media, way too much. And most of people’s impressions I’ve found are often about the world elements in the movie rather than the story itself or the characters.

Oh no! I ❤️ Ready Player One - but it’s my favorite book and so fun! Maybe since I knew the characters so well from the book that the movie was ok? Have you read the book? Or better yet, listened to the audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton?

In principle, I agree with everything said here, but I feel that you couldn’t have chosen two worse movies to make your point. I never read Ready Player One, yet I found the movie entertaining from beginning to end, whereas I lost interest in The Amazing Spider-Man right away and eventually fell asleep. I think your final point is the best takeaway, that a good story needs balance.

Thank you so much for using an action adventure example. I never heard of a lot of contemporary movies so I am far removed from those examples in other videos.
Question, what about happy, go lucky main characters? The simple ones you see in Shounen sometimes that seemingly aren't motivated by fear. I love following optimistic and energetic main characters, but I am not sure how they follow this since they can be simple? A lot of times they are static and the rest of the cast go through more dynamic changes like in Dragon Ball.
Or other shows aimed at younger audiences like Pokemon or Zelda.

I wrote a story where the plot was entirely driven by the actions of the protagonists. The inciting incident isn’t a new problem from outside, but the main character saying something so embarrassing to one of their friends that 2 people wind up dead.

The Harry Potter movies are a GREAT example of character-driven stories. Call me basic, but every single character is meaningful and you can relate to them.

Also, not a movie, but the Buffy the Vampire Slayer tv series is an excellent example of a VERY character-driven story that NEVER excludes good and exciting plotting.

Kindred by Octavia E. Butler = Absolute master piece

The countless Agatha Christie stories are for 90% of them PLOT driven !

SHERLOCK HOLMES ?

Video games stories ?

Plot driven is definitely " NOT " = BAD

I actually really like Ready Player One - his motives are very hidden imho. Protagonist has issues living in poverty with an abusive partner of his aunt. His lack of a fatherfigure does he compensate with being addicted to the world's invenventor's live. In the beginning he cares for himself or his guild - at the end for the whole community. But yes it is so hidden - that nobody sees it. He is not memorable, you're right. It would have mattered more if they would have showed the poverty and how he suffers properly
