What Makes a Great King? Exploring the Archetype of the King in Movies and Television

This is a video I’ve been wanting to do for some time but it took me a while to write and edit a video that includes such a multitude of movies and television shows. Nevertheless, I think Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette’s archetypes are a very interesting way to analyze media and provide personal insights, similarly to Joseph Campbell’s related concept of the Hero’s Journey. I’d love to hear what you think of it!

I come back to this video every few months to remind myself of what authentic, healthy masculinity strives to be. Watching this makes me feel a certain strength emanating from my core. Thank you for making these.

Would you consider doing the feminine arcetypes like the Queen (im a Warrior and married a Queen and we both have issues we have had to deal with and find this framework so very helpful) and Mother? Also explore the juevenile forms as well, like how men need to go through a Hero phase to seperate from the parents and forge their own way but getting stuck there is toxic. Just love your videos on this topic, i must have listened to your warrior video 100 times , it has helped me a great deal.

"Fertility and blessing" first means being productive, providing for the material needs of those whom you lead, bringing home the bacon. Too many men look to their wives to make ends meet. Women have a right to work, but no married woman with children should be expected to work outside the home. Stop expecting your wife to be your mother. A man should work three jobs if he must in order to provide for his family. And a man who fathers children but does not support them is not a man at all. A man cannot lead others to action if he himself is lazy and unproductive.

Alas, many "shadow king" leaders exist in the world right now. Pain first, but opportunity for great transformation awaits. Hang on for the ride.

Kingship is only useful as a metaphor. One must gain rulership over their internal state, then they mature into wisdom and inner power, and become a valuable leader and guide to others.

But a leader inspires others to follow, he does not demand it. External monarchy is slavery; an assertion of an inequality of rights. It is always invalid and immoral, regardless of the ruler's character or intent.

Ahh. I always try to stay out of politics, but this just made me feel the need for "that person" to come at the head of my people. Really, its desperate times like this that call for strong leadership, someone who is confident, brave, someone who can motivate the people. I feel like this person will come. One of my people probably has these qualities....here I go with my patriotism again...

As a teacher, I wanted to make a exercice in litterature, upon the subject of playing and gambling. I wanted to do it in a funny way, so I used in introduction a reference to the Simpson's episode, where Homer and his father loose all their coins at the casino, despite the fact that Abe Simpson motivated his son by telling him Rudyard Kipling's poem "IF" (in french, it's not very popular, sometimes we know it as "Et tu seras un homme, mon fils"). The day of the class, all the students were talking and laughting, thinking they were already in recess. Most of them were between 16 and 21. I didn't tried to raise my voice, I only started reading the text.
In the middle of the reading, they had already stop talking.
When I finished, and said "And you will be a man, my son" (Et tu seras un homme, mon fils), they remained silent for 30 seconds and didn't dare to talk. The talkers were mute, the quiet students were smiling, and the girls were amazed. Only one student said a little "wow" after that, and I believe he spoke for all the class.

Priceless moment of joy and feelings shared, and passing wisdom, from authors of ancient times. Kids, these days, are not bad, they are just misguided. They ask and crave for wisdom.

I was watching the new topgun movie and couldn't help thinking how it portrays the mature masculine. There are very few movies in recent times that portray that so well. it also contrasts well with the earlier movie where he was a hotshot hero archetype.

So many want to be the King but, so few are the Hero. Far fewer are the Sage. Many are the Trickster. Even more are the Child. All of us are potential waiting to manifest. Remember that and Be.

Aragorn is one of the best kings in movie history, though he actually spent little time being an actual king in the movies.

I think Prince William has all the qualities of a great king. Charles, not so much.
