I started to make house music in 1994 with a 1040 STE, then later on I had a 1040 ST FM which I still use now! I make each track with my Atari and hardware synths. Then I transfer it to Ableton, where I add the vocals and the effects. greetz drom Tienen, Belgium. Jason Basson

I'm a child of the 80's home computer revolution. I started on a TRS-80 at school, eventually got an original Atari 800, then an 800XL, and finally an ST and learned Z80, 6502, and 68000 assembly, but I don't miss those days at all! I can now fire up my laptop and use professional level software development, 3D CAD, graphics, presentation, PCB design and circuit analysis and have access to literally a world of information with a few keystrokes. Nah, I'll take today's environment every time!

I bought my next door neighbour's Atari 1040STE in 1995 and shortly after, a run out copy of C Lab Notator SL and barely looked at the hardware sequencers in my Korg T3EX and Trinity Plus after that! The fact that the Atari had built in MIDI ports was huge for electronic musicians and composers at the time! I sold my 1040STE and got a cheap fully expended Mega 4 that I used for a number of years before going to Logic on a PC and later Mac.

If Atari had someone like Steve Jobs, we'd all be on atari now. In the late 80's, an atari (or amiga 2000) could do anything the $8000 macintosh quadra 900 could do for 1/4 the price.

As a European kid in the end 80’s I get an Atari 520st with my bro, it was such a revolution by the times, I discovered later it’s capability in music production with midi, such a nice tool, still use even today by some irréductible makers, nostalgy maybe of this sound grain FM typical… the legend lives on !

The IBM Compatible as a gaming platform overtook the Atari ST and Amiga only because of the external cards, like the SoundBlaster, AdLib sound cards, and subsequently the Voodoo graphics cards. Bone stock, the IBM Compatibles were kinda crappy and I much preferred my Atari ST.

I bought IRON MAIDEN dad's around 2000 ish and didn't have a CD rom player so I couldn't play their game but I went to see 2 or three of their early 80s tours and late 80s shows in the OMNI ATLANTA GA and STP and then they committed TREASON and tore it down and built PHILUPS ARENA????

My first home computer was the 65XE. I went to a 520ST and on to a 1040 soon after. Loved these computers they were so much better then the IBM pc's at school. I spend a lot of time on the early BBS systems on all three of these machines. Today I do a lot more on my phone but at the time it was ahead of it's time.

flew to Atari a few months before the ST release to meet the Tramiels. The Atari offices were very depressing. I did see the room where they were studying the Lisa to see what they could learn. A couple months later I was developing on one of the first 520sts. lots of hand-wiring on motherboard and no rf shielding. I did finally sell off that system last year probably way cheaper than I should have. I really enjoyed working on the machine. things got a lot better once they had hard drives

There's one weird fact missing,about the PCs 'wiping up' the market: his started even before PCs where in any way 'better' than the Amiga. It was mere question of marketing. I have seen may people buy a PC in 1990 and 1991, when they still whee utter crap in comparison for the kids playing with. But still they bought these overpriced machines, which couldn't do anything the home computers couldn't have done better a this stage.

What a great memory! My first computer was a TI99/4A and by the time I got all the peripherals, it occupied 1/4 of my mom’s basement. That Texas Instruments machine is why I found it so easy to learn the Basic Programming language. Then I got a an IBM PCjr, and then a used Apple Macintosh II. I wish I’d gotten an Atari ST as I guarantee I’d STILL HAVE IT TODAY. I write and record music. I am a Mac girl but I’ll tell you if I ever bought an Atari ST I’d still have it for music production.

Such a shame the great hardware capabilities of the STE were hardly used in commercial games. The STE should ideally have been released in 1987 to compete with the Amiga on a closer level and then we'd likely have had software houses use those extra hardware abilities to the full extent including brilliant stereo PCM sound and smooth hardware scrolling.

They probably should have released the STE in 87 to rival the Amiga more. The standard ST would have had a 2 year headstart in the budget market already at that time. Then the Falcon should have been slightly cut down and released at the end of 1990. They should have thrown so much more at the Falcon than they did. It could have been successful if released earlier and with decent support and marketing.

If you like 3.5" floppies, you would probably also like the 3.5" "SuperDisk". They were poised to compete with the 100 MB Iomega Zip drive.
I've never used a SuperDisk, so I can't speak for whether they have that satisfying click but I was always fond of the 100 MB Zip disks. They're a bit thicker in a more rigid shell. The most notable improvement being that low-profile metal tab.

That buzz of new machinery wasn't quite dead with the rise of the PC, just left to consoles but I fear that soon will be a thing of the past. The last couple of generations of consoles are basically just a operationally streamlined PCs with little graphical difference, the WOW factor of new machinery is long dead. The jaw dropping jumps in tech like when the PS1 arrived are no more.

I can imagine there won't even be a PS6, just cloud subscription services. That's me done with gaming and living in past once I can't buy anything to collect and stick on a shelf.

The amiga doesn't have a native chip tune style soundchip does it? All recreated in software using the DACs I think.

Ответить
@johnhunt1725
@johnhunt1725 - 09.08.2022 17:33

I HATE the Yamaha sound chip they settled on. Most folks couldn't afford a decent MIDI device back then, especially after shelling out for the ST, so that doesn't even come close to making up for it, IMHO. It's too bad the AMY was never completed which would have probably sounded much better, but what the system sorely lacked was a capable multi-channel DAC like the Amiga had. Well, that and a blitter chip on release. Actually, what Atari's 16-bit system was missing the most were the Amiga chips they were set to acquire before Tramiel screwed that pooch.

I wish I had the overview over the computer landscape back in the mid 80s, which I have now.
Having started with a 130XE, I should probably have followed Jay Miner to the Amiga.
Anyway ... I ended up being firmly grounded in Linux via a short detour over BeOS/BeBox.
