Why EVERYONE Plays: Roy | Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

We need a new version of this but why no one plays now lol

I started playing as Roy in Melee because I didn't particularly like Marth and Roy was more fun to play IMO so I always was frustrated to see him be ignored in favor of Marth for so long. When he returned in Smash 4 I was elated and went right back to playing as him regularly alternating with Lucina and Luigi who has been my main since Smash 64. I think I finally understand what Luigi and Roy have in common that draws me to both their playstyles and it's the air-game and the aggressive pressure I can put on my opponents. Now that Roy is a top tier sword fighter I feel very vindicated for my preference. Great video!

The fact that Roy is the best rushdown character in the game over the fastest character in the game that being Sonic really says a lot if I'm being completely honest with myself

I hate this character everyone just mashes whit him and that’s it

I've Mained Roy since smash 4 and when ultimate came around it was so good to see him be good finally

As someone who plays Roy (back when I played this game) Roy is fast, great pressure, amazing for dealing with grapplers and my favorite risky fighter!

Roy was my favorite character to play in Melee, and I treated him exactly as you describe: A rushdown close-quarters brawler who looks like a zoning swordfighter. He happens to do a little damage if he barely misses his opponent.

Its odd that Ike lacks a ranged attack because his sword Ragnell is capable of attacking from range in his home games.

Roy’s been my boy since I first unlocked him. I sincerely enjoy playing him more than any other character. His play style suits me the best.

Its funny smash Roy is basically the opposite of roy in his home series game with smash Roy being good meanwhile Roy is considered the worst lord in the series and one weaker units in his game and smash Roy is energetic and aggressive meanwhile in his own game he was and still is considered bland character do to a mix early English patches and only really showing character in very missable dialog but he is in reality is a teenager that's insecure,stressed and suffering from depression do to the death of his soldiers because having 15 year old being a leader in a army is a good idea.

Counters are good as hell off stage I dont know where this mindset of Counters being only for low level players developed. Anyone that can read moves that hard at a high level are dangerous especially with gimpable recoveries

Roy was my main in Melee it's crazy that now he's getting love I don't use him. Think I'm going to practice with him.

Roy is Little Mac with a sword. Which automatically makes his combo game more viable. You could really say Roy is what happens if Marth and Little Mac did the fusion dance.

This makes me super happy. Enjoyed him more than Marth in Melee, and played him and Mewtwo endlessly when they returned for Smash 4. Glad he's clicking for people in Ultimate after being overshadowed by Marth for so long.

Sword characters overall don't require any skill and are very user-friendly.

You can be competitive on any sword character. The game is just a bunch of sword characters that are viable and everything else is fodder for the most part.

Even though I think he was underrated and actually pretty solid in Smash 4, how he plays in Ultimate is how he wishes he played ever since he came out in Melee. He’s excellently designed.

Roy’s counter is an invaluable part of his kit. It’s a move with high risk but high reward. It’s especially useful if your opponent is at a high % and you have a good read on your opponent. It kills bowser and donkey Kong insanely early and their easy to read because of how their moves come out. I find my biggest issue is forgetting to slow down at times. Especially if my opponent is fast, however as long as I can keep in mind that when my rush down methods aren’t being as effective as I want them to be, to simply slow down and be more careful.

I mained Roy since Smash 4, stopped playing Smash when the pandemic hit, and now everyone's talking about Roy like he's top 5. I feel like I missed the birth of my child

Is it weird that I suck with Roy but pretty good with Chrom? They practically have the same moveset, so you'd think that switching from one to the other wouldn't make much of a difference, but with Roy I feel handicapped compared to Chrom. Maybe it's because with Chrom I don't have to worry about sweet and sour spots? Idk maybe it's just all in my head.

Just got back into smash after a few years... it's funny to hear everyone plays roy.. I remember people saying he was super bad before. Lol

Ha! Roy jab is the sole reason I don't use him.

I may not like his recovery move, but it fits him. Whenever I accidentally jab, it takes me out of the game and I can't play properly.

Man...you NEVER hit the Sourspot with Roy, NEVER! Man unless you are a Zoner of course...Im sorry but Roy for me is a Braindead Character...Mash to win...That frame data and the Sweetspot combined are just this: "Mash to win"

Seeing Roy being a top tier in Ultimate makes me so happy. He was one of my favorites in Melee and I played him a lot in Smash 4. It's great to see him getting so much attention in this game.

roy is actually weak, but roy is strong in smash ultimate alone, which just makes up for roy in every other media. roy is still my and our boy though, no matter what.

My brother plays Roy a lot. We aren't competitive level by any means, but we are both trying to learn and get better. However, while I play other characters, I tend to main Hero bc he was the first ultimate character I picked up and I love the artstyle and even his playstyle.

I've noticed that at our current skill levels its becoming very difficult for me to beat him as Roy when im Hero. Sometimes my menu will allow me to get the upper hand if I can catch him or win neutral and use that to keep advantage, but generally it's much easier for him to get in with a short hop and bully me for a while. Thankfully Hero is difficult to kill with his recovery options, but yeah. This video did a lot to explain Roy's strengths to me in better detail than I previously understood.

Damn imagine if this game didn't make you pay $20 to use it's unplayable online
