Vlookup simply explained

I’ve been trying to understand this for months and months and a few of my colleagues have tried explaining this to me but I think they are more interested of showing me how much they know and how much smarter they are than me. They explained it to me over and over again but I always feel they are keeping the most important details out so I can keep going back to them for more help every time I’m analyzing a new spreadsheet. By going back every time it makes me feel incompetent and it makes them feel superior. Not anymore!!!! Now finally!!!!!!! I come across this video!!!!! No BS just pure explanation and pure understanding on how things are being done; and why things are being done the way they are. So I finally went back to my colleagues and explained to them and showed them exactly the same thing you showed me in your tutorial. I also went to the rest of the colleagues and showed them these same instructions. Now everyone understands this in my office and those initial colleagues that were more interested in looking smart and being superior are now looking dumb and stupid. We all now know it and no one is going to them for help anymore. We are all finally on the same page. Thank you.

i have 2 different files A with student name/ father name and B (master file) with all the details along with phone no, now if i use vlookup to get the phone no with matching the names it might not show correct as names can be similar now can u use vlookup and search the phone no with student name and father name combined. i know if i have the roll no i can get the exact details but i dont have.

Sir if invoice no repeated twice than vlookup function shows first result only not for 2nd and nth one Any solution

This is owing to the fact that there can be fewer invoices in the second sheet which one can wish to confirm their existence in the former (first) sheet.

So basically: 
Look up value (A) - is the question; Column Index Number (B) - is the answer of that question.
Q: What is A? A: It is B.
My question now is, can we use any cell for A or does it have to be the first and uppermost cell in a table array?
I don't have anything in my work now where I can use VLookUp for (or H, or X, for that matter) but who knows...
