China has killed more of its own population than the former Imperialist Japanese Empire ever dreamed of.

Which of these two countries would you rather side with? The one that's having violent border clashes with India another nuclear power or Japan a modern democracy? Foreign debt and foreign investment were hugely important for China to grow its economy and meet its human development goals. You’re also looking at a world split in two, where the richest nations of the world are openly planning your annihilation; not only do you have difficult gaining resources, but you have to invest in defence and police in order to defend yourself. To ignore that is either naive or callous. Their investment in industry was not at the loss of agriculture, it was required in order to lift living standards to what they are today, double the life expectancy since the 50s. Compare that to India which was in essentially the same position in the 50s; in every human development measure China wins. Where they getting their expertise and intellectual property required for development? Excluding the Soviet bloc, they had to make their own. As was mentioned near the beginning, Marx would not have imagined that communism first rose in the poorest nations rather than the richest, but it makes sense when you are at the literal pointy end of imperialism. So they had barely any wealth or expertise to begin with. To just ignore all the reasons and instead paint the same old picture of a ruthless leader makes it pretty difficult to then explain how China is the largest economy with one of the best purchasing power parity measures in the world. It became a superpower because Marxism works.

I know people hate on Mao for the Great Leap Forward deaths, and I agree he's responsible for some of it, but the context of the situation is never considered. China was desperate to modernize.
