What I loveabout this scene is how subtly Mikey shows his smarts. "Don't we have newspaper people on the payroll" ....he's already thought it through, knowing full well the tentacles of his fathers influence

These people glorified murder for money...i like how in the middle of #3 Michael has his confession before the preist and realizes how evil it all is

What I find interesting about this scene is the lack of understanding by Clemenza,Teso and Sonny of what Michael has been through. He’s a Marine combat veteran just returning from a brutal war in the Pacific and would have no trouble dispatching two of his enemies.

Al Lettieri; I’d like to say and ask a few things about him. First off all, one of the great things many times said about the film Godfather 1 and is a mainstay comment and compliment, is that the first reason it was so good, was that there was NOT A BAD PERFORMANCE BY ANY ONE IN THE CAST , right down to the smallest part. Of the smaller parts, which actually buck-up the story and the actors in their larger parts, I throw my kudos in with Al Lettieri, who (of course in my opinion) really never in his career got the big-break he deserved (if anyone knows anything it would be great to hear a reply). As Sollozo, he played the best part of his career. As a very believable Siciliano of laid back viciousness, at his calmest when needed to prove his credentials, gave the film that perfect arc and the needed catalyst to really get the plot (and the film) in gear!…..Does anyone out there know any true details about his career? He died fairly young and in contrast to what I read, I heard prior that he died of an overdose.- Thanks

Ok I’m going to give an unpopular opinion here . James Caan annoys the shit out of me in this scene. All this “baddaboop baddabeep” nonsense , is really irritating. He over italianizes the character and it’s like a caricature. Too much hand gesturing, over the top acting , too stereotypical, it’s not a cartoon. And please don’t say “this is how Italians are” , it’s still too much. There I’ve said it

The Godfather was the greatest film of the twentieth century, a masterpiece of cinematic story telling. The cast had chemistry and that made the film work. You can watch it 50 times and everytime the viewer dicovers a nuance not picked up in previous watchings.

Michael was a Marine, which means the Pacific, and that was something none of the rest of them could even conceive...

This scene is presaged by the hospital scene. THAT'S where Michael shows his brains, everything from assessing no bodyguards for the Don to moving him to another room, to telling the baker to put his hand in his pocket like he has a gun. Even the line to McCluskey - "How much is the Turk paying you..." - shows he's a step ahead.

This scene is the denouement, the flowering that we saw at the hospital - and it was THERE, not here, that we first saw the next Don Corleone.

Watch the camera work: Michael begins as a small silent background figure at the bottom of the screen while the camera follows everyone else. Then the camera angle lowers to raise him up in the frame, but still balanced with Tom. Then pans slightly to place Michael in the center, shifting Tom toward the edge of the frame. Finally, slowly, zooming in until Tom is edged out completely and Michael fills the entire screen. Takeover complete.

Pretty much everything you need to know about life is contained in the Godfather.

One of the pivotal scenes of the whole film . So many layers to it: Michael's move to the 'dark-side'; not so the innocent younger brother - he reveals his true self; the way they have him sitting in the chair with all the other protagonists around him, in his orbit, even his brother - this hints at Michael's future as head of the family. It's a brilliant scene.

Michael agreeing to take care of Sollozo is like Vito taking care of Fanucci. It starts their rise to power based on one act of dealing with a problem others could not solve.
