when you say to get on just chatting, do you mean literally mean just talking for a few hours? Or just gaming in the just chatting section?

Im not sure about the just chatting category. Its the most saturated category in terms of streamers, your 0-10 viewer stream would take a mountain of scrolling just to find.

Honestly love this! Do you think these tips are still relevant now?
I want to try just chatting tomorrow and let’s see the difference as a new streamer 🫶🏻

1. Check your audio before you go live. Chat won't tell you when it sucks most of the time. If you don't have a cam, you're cutting your viewership in half, out the gate, and worst of all, nobody will know if you've accidentally muted yourself. I cannot tell you how many 3-4 hour streams I've had where I've accidentally muted myself and didn't even know it because of that. Viewers don't know any better, and go "oh, yet another person not talking on their stream" and just leave. they won't even send a message to see what's up with that. they'll just bounce on you before you even knew they were there.
1b. get a webcam if for no other reason than so people can see and tell you if you're muted. if you can't get one right away, and have a smart phone, there are apps you can install to use your phone as the webcam.

1c.If you have a permanently messy area in your background(because you just don't have a place to put that stuff) and you'd rather not have that visual broadcasted, might I suggest a vtube model? With Vroid studio you can make your own to use for free, and it interfaces with OBS via the VSeeFace program. lots of tutorials on how to set those up here on YT. takes about maybe 2-5 hours max depending on how sucked into creating and modifying your avatar you get. Or I guess you can throw money at the problem and buy a backdrop or greenscreen to cover it up or something, but why?

2. Learn to be okay with just talking to yourself for hours. Unless you do as suggested in this video and start your day off in "Just Chatting" for at minimum 10-20 minutes, that's about the only person you'll ever be chatting to anyways. She is far from the first person to suggest it, as I've heard the same from quite a few others here on YT. Clearly there's something to it. I think the general consensus was do this for your first several streams, and then migrate your core audience to whatever game you plan to play.

2b. This'll probably come off as mean, but it's the truth. If you're not a naturally chatty/entertaining person. . .maybe don't waste your time and money just yet. Try it give a test run, by all means, just set expectations low, okay? Talking to complete strangers is the entire job. It's not going to help your social anxiety; it might make it worse though. The average age of twitch users is something like 13-22. Your audience is going to be edgy kids, they will bully you if you let them.

2c. On the note of edgy Teenagers: Get used to swinging that ban hammer freely, and a lot. You'll be handing them out so much you'll probably start feeling like Oprah. "You get a ban, you get a ban, and you get a ban, all you mofos are getting bans!" Utilize your time in just chatting to get to know people, and promote the people you like into mod positions, to do it for you. That way you get to focus on being entertaining while gaming or whatever it is you plan to do with your channel.

3. To 2c's end, your moderation practices will determine what kind of community you have overall. If you plan to cater to the more edgy people, you might end up with an audience of literal nazis. See something you don't like? Swing the banhammer at it. Keep a pretty tight grip on that banhammer, follow TOS to the letter, generally make sure chat is too, and everything will be ok. Set clear rules in chat settings so they get prompted by the rules when they click the chat box for the first time, and put a copy of said rules in an info box below the stream player, so nobody can have an excuse for why they didn't follow the rules, nor cry to you about it after getting banned/timedout. Remember: most of them are children, they will do this completely shamelessly.

3b. when reading TOS, and you find a rule you need clarity on, don't be too afraid to ask a fellow streamer, *between* streams(not during, that's rude and nobody likes it). Ask a few really. Don't expect an immediate response, but asking several might give you several ways to interpret the rule while also increasing the odds of getting a response in a timely manner.

4. Keep your day-job. until you can consistently pull something like 500-1k viewers in a stream, you're not going to be able to earn enough to match a part-time job, much less a fulltime one without also doing general media creation on all the other platforms to go along with it. if you're doing JUST Twitch: Treat it as the hobby it is.

5. Avoid burnout. keep streaming to 2 times a week or less, or it's going to start feeling like a job with none of the benefits.

Thank you, I’ll give “Just chatting” a chance. Although, I wonder, what do you do in that category before getting your first chat? I’m an open person and I enjoy talking to people but if there’s no gameplay in front of me and no people in chat, what do I talk about? :)
