I mean, I started with just a pocket knife and some scrap 2x3 at work. With one knife I carved a spoon, several rings, and a triquatra relief.

I think all you really need is a blade, a piece of wood, and a willingness to learn, be creative and make things work.

Started carving as a kid using bit of old firewood with a small pen knife my dad bought me. 50 years later still carving today and still have that old knife though I do use better tools now.
