Schopenhauer: The Philosopher Who Knew Life’s Pain

Schopenhauer was childless- end of story. Misery IS having no progeny. Happiness is pushing a stroller. I wrote a Master's Thesis on his most noteworthy follower: Nietzsche. Same sad story: thrice rejected in proposing matrimony. On top of that terrible lack, both men rejected God, apart from whom no one, not even parents, can be truly happy. RFGA, Ph.D.

How does all this relate to those toxic positivity people?

A great video, however it eludes Arthur's proposal of escaping pain through aesthetic contemplation. When a beholder "becomes one" with an object, experiences sublime, they forget about anything else, hence avoiding sufferings. Physiologically, the brain starts to percieve and process the object of art. Perhaps, this action somehow correlates with the Eckhart Tolle's idea of consciousness without thought. Since, I believe when people are truly mesmerized by works of art, the initial fascination truly comes from emotions and not thoughts.

What if you see death as the absence of pain? At least growing older is not that dreadful cause theres a happy prospect according to schopenhauers logic.
I often say to myself that man is the saddest animal around on earth. Maybe cause we have unrational desires unlike all the other creatures. We are blessed if we have the power to exercise self restraint.

Schopenhauer reminds me of the Indian and then Pakistani short story writer Saadat Hasan Manto, who was once told by a court that his stories were too "shameless" when he wrote about the pain of a prostitute, or a r*ped woman. He replied "why not talk about things, just as they are"

Life sucks, undeniably, for most. But it doesn't suck for so many. How do we justify that? It's so not fair.

I think one of the major inspiration behind his will to live concept is the idea of 3 gunas - sattva,rajas and tamas from Bhagavat Gita..... although will concept is more universal

Life sucks only because it's become so complicated , depression was never a problem just a few decades ago , the system is floored in many ways , the relationship concept is another new aged problem , many have just lost the true self and deep understanding of existence , humans think they are not animals for starters , that's why they dress up and put make up on to make them feel indifferent , self absorbed and the I'm "special " syndrome " A species " gone burgers" literally , destroying their own habitat / world for a quick party and a bucket list , when I was a child I questioned the deforestation and toxicity of the industrial revolution and scientists of the state assured us everything was "A "okay , now we are scratching our heads on how we can fix this , I agree with Arther on many of his observations and out looks .

Schopenhauer is a philosopher I agree with. It's a shame that people would rather waste their entire existence living in ignorance to the harshness of our pointless lives. We work our lives away and then we reproduce so our offspring will waste their lives working, too? What a joke.

If I had a time machine, then I would go back and tell Schopenhauer not to worry too much about the pain and suffering that comes with the lives of other people and animals and that he should focus mostly on himself: his actions, his feelings.

After Schopenhauer died, God probably told him about why he was wrong about his negative view on humanity.

Ditch your self sabotaging conscience. Live a life with no hope and no regrets. Like a free spirit. Turn evil, if needed. You don't have to suffer for existing or being yourself. Unless you believe so. Unless you care about yourself, which is the very reason why you exist!

Life is a forced existence. I didn't ask to be created. But I were created by my parents, for whatever reason. A life filled with loneliness and depression, that's what it resulted in, because of my absent and emotionally unavailable parents. I don't want to have my own kids, sex and marriage. But that makes it hard to find a partner. To bring another life into this world is a forced existence. A punishment for whatever reasons unknown.

truths are seperate from perspective. suffering is unavoidable in life, yes. can you make something meaningful of it? absolutely.
i think suffering is actually a gateway to a more fulfilling life, however that depends on the person themselves.

The realization of not caring what other people think is a valid one. But about the suffering part I think he carried himself into a cycle.
Life has no meaning. We are all electromagnetic energy, all there is, has been and ever can be having an experience called human. The best we can do is to stay in the present with a loving attitude.

If I had the same pessimistic outlook on life as this guy did, then I would become a scientist or engineer (or their boss) and I would build an 18 kilometer tall giant robot packed with weapons such as missiles and atomic bombs and lasers and I would rampage across Earth killing and destroying everything until humanity and all sentient life on Earth is extinct and the world is a barren wasteland.

This has been my world view for the longest time. When I look at the world I see the infinite things that cause us pain and the very VERY few things that can actually bring people happiness or enjoyment in comparison.

Life's a bitch...yet we keep coming back for more.....
