What are the advantages of 301 redirects over rel="canonical"?

Although both are seemingly OK, I prefer using the rel cannonical since it's a good way of preventing duplicate content issues. Gotta say though that there are also some merits in using the 301's.

Thanks for the clarification. I often have a hard time deciding which way to go with discontinued products or dead pages. I think I will stick with 301's :)

Have completely tried avoiding any 301 redirects and use canonical on every page. Some use 301 redirects when they have changed a page path which is proper, but canonical helps avoid duplicate content issue the best in my opinion. Making use of the two when properly needed is the best plan of action.
