Space orbits are relative to earth's gravitational-force(drop-down, hold-altitude geo-orbital, hold-position geo-stationary, hold-altitude again, fling-out to space). Orbits are maintained using zero-thrust.

Re-entry can be sub-sonic, relative to atmosphere air-friction, at various points of decent, to maintain structural-integrity (avoid burn-out).

Trajectories of single-stage (multiple-warheads) can be modified(not with modern sabotaged electronics components) to 3 trajectories plus a final supersonic-hypersonic approach to avoid surface to air missiles.

Trajectory stages,
= sub-sonic launch to save fuel and reduce launch-detection(big flames, big smoke) while keeping missile properly angled to lower air-friction altitude and increase speed as air-friction reduces (supersonic to hypersonic)
= space, use small-thrusters(coarse and fine adjustments) to change trajectory for an orbit that will arrive at a predefined-position in space for - synchronous(one minute window) of desent-re.entry of other missiles to achieve synchronous(one second window) for detonation
= desent-re.entry and accelerate(minimal) as required to use parabolic-trajectory
= final speed up to avoid surface to air missile (supersonic to hypersonic), no trajectory.

There are many effective methods and devices could be invented to prevent ICBMS. The most effective one would be creating artifical lighting in spontaneous moment towards it. Laser hit also is an effective choice but considering the amount of heat and radiation will be poured down on earth the vacume creating and sucking it down on oceans seemingly is most effective solution. Needs serious elaboration.
