I have to compliment and thank you for how you speak in this video. I had to turn another one off because the speaker was so obnoxiously trying to stretch out his runtime with awkward, stilted, repetitive narration. Your narration on the other hand was smoth and easy on the ears, as well as entertaining. No saliva sloshing around on the microphone either, which means a lot to those of us with sensory issues.

I would have been 8 years old. My mother let me eat raw brownie batter and watch South Park. She was crying and scared when the ball dropped, but by 2AM, we were crashed on the living room floor.

I remember some stocked up on guns and ammo. But all the work that was done got done before 2000 hit, and we noticed nothing really.

Had to find a video about Y2K after watching some old episodes of the Drew Carey Show from 1999. A big plot point in a few of the episodes is characters getting ready for Y2K, based on the scare tactics of the time. They take all their money out of the bank, they buy bulk food, and Drew builds a bomb shelter. At one point, one character genuinely says to another character: "Do you think the world is going to end in 3 months?" That really made me think about how this was a real fear for people at that time. At first I couldn't imagine living like that, but then I remembered I live in the year 2023, and have already lived through 3 or 4 "world ending" events, so I think I understand the fear at that time.

Since my dad worked for PHI "Petroleum Helicopters International" at the time; I wasn't worried about it. So I was just porpered for an 3 day power outage since I knew if it happened the power company wound have power back on by then.

Also it's easy now to say that everyone should have used 4 digit dates to begin with, but those early computers were very low on memory and it's frankly insane that so many of these mainframe programs survived to be an issue in the year 1999...

I was working in IT during this time. There were things that needed to be fixed. The concern was that not all issues were caught. New Year's Eve was on a Friday. I remember being offered triple pay to work on Saturday and/or Sunday to be around in case there were any issues. There were not many, but it wasn't because there was nothing to be fixed to begin with.

I started working as a programmer in the mid-late 90's. All of my work was short term contracts. Some of those jobs were updating code to prepare for "y2k". I had to review every place a date was used, which was harder than it sounds because dates weren't always stored in date fields. Often the code was fine and only needed minor tweaks to ensure future-proofing. There was one corporation that brought me in and were using an AS/400 for just a very basic inventory database which only 1 or 2 people ever used. I told them they were wasting money on that setup and it wasn't really even worth going through that code. I set them up with a simple Access DB, which I normally hated to use, but in this instance it actually made sense for once. They were happy to retire that server and stop maintaining it.

Oh and that Cash Register was from Fort Bliss (El Paso, TX). I was stationed there for 7 years, and I have a good feeling that was at the thrift store.

We all need to start making plans for Y3K
start by throwing money at anyone who claims they can use a mouse
that's what they did in 99, sorry 1999 lol

If you ever feel bad about putting off your homework assignment or essay to the last minute, at least you can take solace in the fact that basically the entire U.S.A had 42 years to sort this problem, and they literally waited until the last day to do so!

Do you think the small problems seen on 1/1/2000 (I typed out a 4 digit year for clarity) are a window into what could have happened to the large institutions who spent half a trillion dollars fixing Y2K? Could it really have been pretty bad? I'm sure the experts ran tests, but also, the experts could have seen how lucrative selling bug fixes were too. Hmmm...
