EP5: Open Rotor, discover a revolutionary concept engine | Safran

Can you imagine an engine that offers a 30% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the current and most widely used engines? At Safran, we did! Our engineers are currently working on an Open Rotor concept engine. Revolutionary in its design and architecture, it aims to create new efficiency for the next generation of commercial jets, set to make its appearance towards 2030–2035.

Within Clean Sky’s framework—the largest ever public-private European aeronautics research program—Safran and our partners have developed a life-size Open Rotor demonstrator to study new and higher performance configurations. A necessary research to prepare for the future, as a conventional engine’s design is reaching its maximum efficiency. The next generation may be Open Rotor!
