Petroleum-based gasoline that does not contain ethanol will still succumb to oxidation and volatile compound evaporation in a sealed container or tank, but these processes usually occur more slowly in pure gasoline. Expect non-ethanol gas to last at least 6 months if it's properly stored.Sep 9, 2022

Ethanol's biggest problem is it's derivative acetic acid, that corrodes brass carburettor jets. Zinc in the brass oxidises to white zinc oxide, which has to be removed manually by stripping down the carburettor to get to the jets. Ethanol actually oxides over time, if left to stand in a vehicle, into acetic acid. This acetic acid will also rust out steel tanks and fuel lines, causing the fuel filter to become blocked, as well as the jets.

The moral of this story is that you should use the fuel recommended by the manufacturer. My car was designed to run on 10% blended fuel and I have used 91 and 98 octane fuel with no marked difference in fuel economy. Engines that are designed and recommended to run on ethanol blended fuel have the appropriate fuel lines installed. It is true that over time the ethanol will seperate if the fuel is left for any length of time if it is exposed to the atmosphere I have a sealed glass container of ethanol blended fuel that I have kept for over 12 months and has no sign of separation. There was a study conducted by the US military in that they analysed the wear characteristics of various fuels on engines with methanol being the fuel that caused more damage. Ethanol was on a par with unadulterated fuel.

We could be feeding living organisms with the corn that we put in our fuel. I know farmers won't like this sentiment. I think it's ashame to waste food when we have an abundant source of crude under our feet for many years to come. I am lucky. Where I am at I can get anywhere from 87 to 93 Octane of REAL GAS. 87 octane is .60 per gallon more. I run that in my 99 Nissan Frontier. Owners manual says to stay away from ethanol/methanol if it can be avoided. Runs like a top. 2nd owner with 59k on the odometer. Original owner burned straight fuel too.

Of course! 100% EtOH is 30% less energy dense than 100% gasoline. But the risk of water condensation in cold climate and with fuels stored longer (ie in small engine home owner scenarios) is higher up here in the northern midwest and has caused EtOH spiked fuels to lead to stalling and starting issues over non EtOH spiked petro fuels in my experience thus negating the oxygenation benefit of EtOH spiked fuels. So in my car with high fuel usage rate....I go with low octane, regular EtOH spiked fuels at the pump..... but with my snow throwers and other small engines that sit a long time between runs.....I run 100% petro.

I don't understand why these small engines get screwed up so quickly with normal gas.

We have an old Saturn which we sometimes don't use for well over a month. A lawnmower would have to go to the shop to get started if the gas was left. But the Saturn starts. The problem isn't the gas. It's the motors and carbs. Shame on them.

Ethanol added to fuel lowers the energy burnt per litre. Its cheaper here in NZ than proper fuel (10%) but others have said you wont get the same mileage with cars. Ok the worse stuff: phase separation, Issues with composites (fuel tanks), issues with metals in older vehicles (fuel pumps and carbs ) I avoid it like the plaque. Even a large automobile watch group here said to avoid it unl;ess they make it a lot cheaper.

If you mix the ethanol yourself into the petrol, you will, however, get a higher octane value and can increase the compression and change the timing if you are someone who is involved in motor sports or interested in performance. Pure ethanol has well over 100 octane and contains more oxygen. so if petrol companies without added more ethanol with zero octane content are just as high, then they would probably have done it by reducing some other octane-increasing chemical? Or in another way

Well. Alcohol is a racing fuel quality. Far superior to gasoline in almost every way except perhaps energy content when comparing gasoline-compression ratio engines non-optimized for alcohol fuels such as methanol and ethanol. Saying its 'worse' just because some (any particular) engine isn't designed for alcohol and it melts some component isn't actually a strike against alcohol.

This debate is silly. Henry Ford started producing Model T's in 1908 that could run on an ethanol - gasoline blend after the Federal Government ended the $2 per gallon tax that was levied to help fund the US Civil War. Refiners used ethanol to raise octane levels since then with little being used from the late 40's to 1974 due to the abundance of cheap lead compounds. During WW2 civilian gasoline sold in the US contained from 10% to 65% ethanol so more gasoline and lead compounds was available for the military. I never heard any adults that drove back then complain about alcohol in gasoline screwingv up fuels, carburetors and metals. European countries continued to add ethanol to gasoline after the war. Great Britain sold a 'Cleveland Blend' until 1968. The US started using ethanol again to stretch gasoline stocks after the '73 Oil Embargo then to raise octane levels in unleaded gas. I was driving old trucks and cars back then that got the carburetor rebuilt and all new fuel lines due to rubber hardening and cracking. Drove those using the ethanol blend without having any problems. Maintained my powered lawn and construction equipment over the years using the standard rubber fuel lines sold at the auto parts stores. Those held up just fine so I assume they were producing alcohol resistant rubber fuel lines since the 1920's.

Don't know, don't have to care. Local gas depot that supplies the gas stations in this region have tanks on the water line. That is, their tanks extend below the ocean and their fuel just float on top of the ocean.
That means they cannot receive any ethanol based fuel, period.

If it has a carburetor I stick to non-ethanol. Ethanol was introduced to the market after fuel injection was dominant. A lot of what started this is companies like Honda refusing to warranty engines that have ethanol in them.
