How I learned to Code in 6 MONTHS & Got a Job Offer (Self-Taught)

Very good and valid info on learning how/what to code, something I have been interested in for a while! I was already quite familiar with job search/application processes but it was a nice touch!

I really appreciate this video. Going for a career change and this really is motivating. Doing an online bootcamp, lost my momentum a bit, but back on it.

This is a really good video

I started off using node/express and firebase as my back end and DB but now I find that node/express and MySQL with Workbench is so much easier to configure and is more performant and powerful as long as you know a bit of SQL for basic CRUD functionality

I never finish tutorials I end up experimenting with my own things. It doesn’t really help at the end, nothing gets complete but I lean cool stuff

man, this is definitely spreading some false hope. The market is absolutely f'ed right now. 95% of resumes that don't have the right degrees just get auto-rejected and aren't ever even looked at. I've read dozens of people in the USA that have 5 yoe and a degree in CS and it's still a slog to get a decent job.

These clickbait videos are the worst. I’ve been a SWE for over 3 years and everyone in the industry knows this isn’t true. Selling false hope to people is messed up. I know dozens of people who tried to transition to engineer and none of them got jobs after years of searching. Cost them tons of time and money

But in your linkedin you a have a DEGREE... So how is self taught ? i like the video tho.. I even sub.

Hi James I set a 6month goal to learn programming languages this year and it started on the 1st of July. I skipped HTML & CSS as I already know that so jumping into JS and going on.
I however only have evenings to study and code so lets see how it all turns out come Jan 2025.

I'm going to tell you all right now, for those beginners out there, if you have a very hard time with the basics, and grasping fundamental concepts and how to actually use/incorporate them. You're going to have very hard time choosing this as a career in the long run. If you less analytical and logical and more creative, artistic and free minded, you're likely going to struggle greatly with coding and it's not for you.

This is great to see. I feel a lot better about the steps I've been taking to become a software developer because of this. I learn through projects, and I have done what you said about taking a second to comment every section of code with what it means in an effort to learn it. I can't replicate all of it myself yet, but I do feel like when I look at code now, most of the time I understand what's happening. I've made my own tutorial on how to integrate Google Authentication into a Unity Mobile Application and I feel like that project, of not only learning how to do something, but trying to make a good resource for other people to learn to do the same was really helpful for me to learn. Working on a firebase tutorial next, thinking that soon I need to branch off of Unity after I make at least one solid app on it.

Bro is sayin how he got a job in 2021, the time when companies were hiring anyone who had at least four fingers.

Though I respect the time and effort you put into your content, I think it goes w/o saying to mention on every video to folks who are not versed in the web & software world, that unless a company specifically says that a degree of some sort isn't required, most jobs DO require that an applicant has a degree. I think some people see videos like this, learn to code, then apply for jobs that require STEM degrees, and now they feel like they've studied all this wonderful content for nothing. All-in-all, thank you for content.

It's awesome and I am all for self taught. But also keep things realistic, in the thumbnail you say software engineer. And then in the description Full Stack Developer. Without a degree there is definitely a hard ceiling for position and income. If you truly want a Software Engineer position or Senior Software Engineer position, you will in most cases need a Computer Science degree. In the position of self taught I would start with a position and find a company that is willing to pay for the education. I also think we are at a point now where the market is a bit saturated and finding positions with no degree and/or no experience is very difficult. Keep going at it but also keep things a bit more realistic.
