Mother And Bebe is happy to include wearing instructions for our carriers. We hope you find this resource useful when using our products and please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
A few initial points about wearing a carrier include but are not limited to the following:
When placing the carrier on your body, hold it in front of you so the side you wish to be against the baby is against your body (most likely the solid colored side). Tie the short straps around your body. When you let go of the carrier, it will lay such that the pattern you wish to display should be facing towards your body and against your legs like an apron. The waist padding will lay so it forms a pocket.
Tie the straps behind the back of a younger child to provide more support. For larger children tie them under the child's bottom.
Always double check that everything looks correctly tied and in place by looking in a mirror, window or other reflective surface. This also ensures that the child is comfortable. Do this especially when you are carrying a child on your back.
Instead of tying a bow, tie all straps in a square knot. A square knot description and instruction is shown below for your safety and use. Should there be left over strap that is long enough to tie in a bow, feel free to do so for decorative purposes.
When carrying a child on your back, you may tie the waist straps just under your breasts in order to have the child riding higher on your back thus providing visibility over your shoulder.
Some children prefer to have their arms outside of the carrier. This is safe and often more comfortable depending upon the child.
A child should be sitting with their knees higher then their hips at all times.
Always use a bounce or hop to help get your child into the carrier in the most ergonomic position (this excludes newborns who should have their feet crossed and tucked). Also, once the child is securely in the carrier, take a moment to slightly roll their hips forward and up a bit ensuring that the knees are higher then the hips.
POSITIONING FOR A NEWBORN
When placing your newborn into a mei tai, you will need to keep his/her legs inside and not straddling your body like an older child would do. To do this, hold your baby against your chest. Gently fold the feet over each other almost as if the baby is going to sit Indian Style. Tuck the feet up, crossed slightly. Babies automatically hold their feet in this position so it is very comfortable for them. You will then proceed with the below instructions in tying the mei tai around the baby and onto your body.
SHORTENING YOUR MEI TAI
Babies are not all shaped the same. If your baby seems to get lost inside our mei tai you can make the body of it shorter by rolling the bottom of the body up and towards the inside. From here, tie it on your body as usual and making sure the waist straps are snug so it does not come unfolded as you wear it. Some babies like to have their arms out and free so making the body shorter may help them feel more comfortable.
