Charlie Chaplin wrote this song to go along with the theme of his movie Modern Times. Charlie lost his mother to madness when he was 7, and was placed in am Oliver Twist workhouse with his half brother Sidney.....his Dad was not in the picture....an alcoholic. At 8, he was released and managed to get a job in a comic dance troupe at the age of 8. Charlie lost his sweetheart to the Spanish flu when he was a young man. So he knew about suffering. He based this song on an Italian opera piece, I don't remember which one, but it is one of the most beautiful songs of the century...written by someone who was not even known as a songwriter.
