@wordsoftheworld Thanks Judith and Brady! That was a really interesting one I thought. Keep up the good work with all your great channels (esp periodic!!) its very much appreciated here. ;-)
ОтветитьInteresting word origin. We were taught at school that it comes from "Eidgenosse", as it was a Swiss, Calvin, who influenced French protestants the most. But maybe that's just because i was taught in Switzerland ;)
ОтветитьI have Huguenot ancestry and only learned about them ten years ago as I assumed that all French people were Catholic.
ОтветитьI have Huguenot ancestry in me. The Hartley and Arender family intermarried with my family in Mississippi. In 1792 there was a Jacob and Juan Hartley in Mississippi in 1792. Frank Hartley was married to Nancy Bowen Arender who was also related to me. I read that the King of France persecuted the Huguenots with the Edict of Nantes in 1598. Amazing and I live to do crafts and weaving. It must be hard wired. lol.
ОтветитьJackie Martling is a Huguenot.
ОтветитьMost of the Huguenots who immigrated in South Africa were from south of France (Nimes, Marseille). That's why you can find some french names in Stellenbosch area like Provence, Cabrière and Haute Cabrières is primarely a countryside close to Nime (France). I'm so fascinated by these guys who left France to live without any persecutions their own religions. Honneur à tous ces hommes et ces femmes qui ont bâti tant de choses au nom de la liberté de pensée à travers le Monde...

Ответить@zaphodtrillian lol, very grown up and Academic of you to answer such a simple question with such complexed and adverse language. I think not :P and in actual fact yes I am :) I was only asking you if you were in fact an academic, as it is only fair to ask when the person in question can actually answer. have a good day Sir! and maybe if you take the chip off of your shoulder that has nothing to do with the people you are aiming it at (as they all died hundreds of years ago) smile and live yours
Ответить@zaphodtrillian also could you please list these supposedly his-story accurate books and not Bok's so that we may see the alternative perspective, other than the one currently presented. thank you "Academic Zap" peace, love and blissfulness be with you. Monk-One.
ОтветитьMy French ancestor was a Huguenot named Étienne Dechenaux. He came to the US after being relocated as a mercenary by the British to fight in the French and Indian War. Upon arriving in the US, the school teacher, changed his name to Stephen Chennault. His grandson later fought the English in the American Revolution.
ОтветитьI have got huguenot ancestry in me from France, from my dads side. Does any of you how I can find out anything from my ancestors? All I know is, that my ancestors fled to germany and changed their last name from Jean to Schiang, and then relocated in Denmark.

ОтветитьHmm, with headphones on it sounds like someone is whispering right behind my left ear.
Ответить"Europe is Catholic" and Orthodox. Eastern Europe was Orthodox; a fact people seem to forget a lot. Also, southern Spain was Muslim for a while.
ОтветитьOrigin of the word "Huguenot": Swiss people are called (in German) "Eidgenossen" (meaning: ~sworn-brothers). The French - b/c of Calvin in Geneva - called their Protestants "Eidgenossen", but - of course - with their totally incapable pronunciation skills it sounds " 'uegenotts" -> therefore "huguenots and this have been even re-importet into german as "Hugenotten" or/and into english as "Huguenots".
Ответитьlet's not forget that protestants committed as much atrocities than the catholics during the 16th century in France. If you think that they were hated just because of religion differences then you are quite wrong.
ОтветитьI have Huguenot ancestry from Lancaster PA. (1731-?) Hans John Bushong, his daughter Anna Barbara Bushong) married my 6th gen grandfather Philip Ludwig Grimm.
ОтветитьThis is a concise, informative introduction to a fascinating subject.
ОтветитьToday the royals allow our Muslim enemy into England, Alas! How far England and the West has fallen, and along with England shall the "so called" Royal family fall as well, once and for all, God willing. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, Lord hear our prayer, Amen.
