9 Cherry Shrimp Keeping Myths Debunked! (Food, Water Parameters, Molting, Tank Mates, Tank Setup)
In this video, I’m debunking common myths about cherry shrimp and sharing my personal experiences keeping them. Whether you’re new to shrimp keeping or have some experience, this guide will help you better understand cherry shrimp care and avoid common misconceptions.
### Myth 1: Cherry Shrimp Only Eat Algae
While cherry shrimp do eat algae, their diet is much broader. They enjoy fish food, shrimp lollies, leaves, and even dead fish. I’ve linked a video in the description showing them eating a variety of foods. So while they do eat algae, they are not strict algae eaters and need a diverse diet.
### Myth 2: Cherry Shrimp Don’t Eat Algae
Some claim cherry shrimp aren’t effective algae eaters, but my experience says otherwise. They graze on soft algae like brown diatoms and green algae, contributing to a cleaner tank. I’ve linked a study showing that cherry shrimp are efficient algae eaters, second only to Amano shrimp.
### Myth 3: Cherry Shrimp Don’t Need Filtration
Cherry shrimp have a low bioload, so filterless tanks with plenty of plants can work well. However, I still recommend filtration in most setups unless you have enough fast-growing plants to handle waste naturally. Check out the filterless tank setup videos linked below for more info.
### Myth 4: Cherry Shrimp Don’t Need Water Changes
While some tanks may require fewer water changes, regular testing and adjustments are essential. Water top-offs might be enough for shrimp-only setups, but changes should be made if water quality declines.
### Myth 5: Cherry Shrimp Require Perfect gH Levels
Shrimp need calcium and magnesium for molting, but I’ve successfully kept them in both soft and harder water. While I sometimes use shrimp salt to raise gH, I’ve seen shrimp thrive without it in older tanks. They are more adaptable than many think.
### Myth 6: Cherry Shrimp Can’t Be Kept with Aggressive Fish
While it depends on the personality of individual fish, I’ve successfully kept cherry shrimp with bettas and honey gouramis. Some bettas will go after shrimp, but others, like my betta Marmalade, peacefully coexist with them. Gouramis tend to leave shrimp alone.
### Myth 7: Cherry Shrimp Need Large Tanks
Shrimp don’t require much space and mainly need grazing areas. I’ve kept shrimp in jars as small as 1.6 gallons, and they’ve bred successfully. As long as water conditions are stable, large tanks aren’t necessary.
### Myth 8: Not All Neocaridina Colors Are Equally Hardy
While red cherry shrimp are the easiest to keep, other colors like yellow are also hardy. However, my orange Neocaridina were more challenging to establish. If you’re new, I recommend starting with red or yellow varieties.
### Myth 9: Shrimp Tanks Don’t Need to Be Cycled
Cycling a tank before adding shrimp is essential to avoid ammonia spikes and copper contamination from new plants. Even in low-tech setups, it’s safer to cycle the tank for a few weeks before introducing shrimp.
That wraps up this video! I hope this clears up some common misconceptions about cherry shrimp care. Be sure to check the links in the description for more videos and studies. Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you in the next one!
