Love or hate Lars, people should at least respect that he's always thinking about making his drums have a distinct sound. He's very creative on the drums, but it backfires enough for some people to really not like it.

But I think it's cool to see any drummer try to mix things up. I have a love/hate relationship with him, mostly because I love his drumming on the first handful of albums, but hate that he kinda let himself go.

Maybe Lars is just doing what he feels at this moment in time. He doesn't really have to be conscious about it, he just strike those drums and hope for the best the rest of the band catches up with his trip. 🤣

Lar's oddities are what makes Lars, Lars. People LOVE the Dave Lombardo version of Battery and its without doubt played phenomenally but it just wasnt.... Metallica.

😂 “… literally, a CD.”

They didn’t have CDs when I first heard/got it. LP or cassette.

My first copy was on cassette.

Regardless of what side of this fence you're on, Lars is definitely laughing all the way to the bank. Being who he is and who he plays with, has basically given him the green light to do as he pleases. Weather he shows up on tour with a Hello Kitty drum kit, or just plays AC/DC beats, to Metallica songs.

Me, I'm a black and white kinda guy. If I buy an album, and I've listened to it umpteen times, THAT'S the version I know. That's what's familiar. THAT'S why I like the band/music. If I buy a concert ticket for a band that I listen to, I don't want to show up and have to wonder if it's a cover band, or impromptu improv night. Would I have liked the 2021 version, had that been original to the album? I can't say with certainty if I would or would not have. All I know is what's been drilled over the years.
But again, he's Lars Ulrich, playing in the unstoppable machine that is Metallica, and because of his "liberties" (along with additional 'departures' from their raw appealing music) that's why I haven't considered myself a fan, since '88.

Having played drums back in the day and being a huge Metallica fan, I was very disappointed in the live shows that I saw. Saw Puppets tour, the Black tour and then didn't see them again until '19 for whatever tour that was. In the earlier tours, Lars NEVER played anything live like it was recorded. He always added some bullshit fills or double bass when it was unnecessary and IMHO, ruined the whole show. That said, when I saw them in '19, there were subtle differences on SOME songs, but for the most part, he played pretty much like the songs were recorded and I was much more appreciative of that show than the previous ones, for sure. Lars is no Peart or Portnoy, but his style suits Metallica. Enjoy the vids!🤘🏻

I've noticed the accents on the hi hat at the same time as the snare hits and I've likened it to how Roger Taylor often opens them slightly every snare hit. It has a similar sound, and I really like it. Adds a different groove to some basic beats.

They've mentioned in interviews that Lars is following James more than vice versa, which is what I think makes Metallica have a unique feel that is missing when other people try to do their songs.

James has a better sense of rhythm than even a lot of drummers in metal, and Metallica songs are all about the riff. And with James playing as solidly as he does (paired with Rob in the modern day, who has an impeccable sense for groove) allows Lars (as well as Kirk) to be a bit more loose and it adds a humanity to their songs that I think a lot of metal bands lack. Some bands just feel kind of sterile with how pin point accurate they try to be in trying to replicate their albums live. There are certainly bands who do that kind of thing very well, but it has to service the music. And Metallica's music just sounds better with that air of chaos to it.

Also, I find the drum parts to Metallica songs to be almost as catchy as any of the riffs or the vocal parts are. TL;DR I like Lars a lot
