hey, can this be done on smooth finish? -moved from Phoenix to Atlanta and remodel, we had skip trowel in Phoenix?

Can this technique be used to make a knock down texture? Will the sand be visible after it's painted?

after popcorn removal, do you have to skim coat on the newly flat sheetrock? or can you just go right to texture?

I'm about to do the ceiling and walls in a larger room. It'll take me days to do, dragging my step ladder around with my 3 foot wing span. I just repaired a ceiling crack yesterday and I'm ready for death. Us homeowners don't have the muscle memory needed to use the tools efficiently. If there were someone around here to hire, I would've hired them. I wish I could just pull you through the screen 😂

Where do you buy your sand, they're no sand labeled as 20/30 sand. Or 100lb bags

This is definitely a way. I would say personally I’ve found that adding sand is not necessary and you can get a perfectly acceptable finish without it. The people in my area of Texas prefer a much smoother finish with smaller gaps in the ‘skip’ and larger smooth areas. You mention you are in Florida so this is a very regional method but not preferred in Texas. After all, you may have just gotten rid of popcorn or crows foot texture, why would you want to make a new texture so bumpy and rough? You can also see that the sand causes the knife to bounce which creates unsightly linear ridges. The third or fourth disadvantage to adding sand is how difficult you are going to make it to ever re-texture again in the future if necessary. You think removing popcorn is hard? Lol. Good tutorial but for those watching, take it with a grain of …sand, lol.

Hey Paul, thanks for the great video. I'm currently working on a ceiling repair about 12' by 18' and I'm trying to match the heavy knockdown texture but my marchalltown sharpshooter doesn't spray thick enough. I almost matched it with skip trowel but that was a little too big. I also tried the sponge but that didn't look right either. Do you have any advice? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Paul, great video. It is very well done and I appreciate the explanation throughout. Many DIY videos don't explain things thoroughly.
I am in the midst of renovations on my house. My question is if the ceiling has no texture currently on it but has been painted, do you need to put a skim coat on prior to the texturing or can you do it right over the paint?

I hate sand in drywall. The roughness of it is terrible.
