i didn't know there were waypoints saved so i thought the entire thing was a domain inwhich if you left, you would lose all the progress and it ended up taking me more than 4 hours to finish everything. i pulled an all-nighter and school was not very pleased with me the next day.

I think the trick is that you have to break the sapling, then go into another phase/domain thing where the sapling is still broken. That worked for me. I don't know if it matters how many other times you go through or fiddle with the compass. If I'm wrong, let me know, but breaking the sapling seems to be the key.
