ОтветитьI find it interesting that the German policeman's hat does not have the Nazi symbol, but is a 1920's design.
ОтветитьAll the actual Chinese or Asian actors had no Chinese accent since they probably were American but the white man playing a Chinese had to have a Chinese accent so we would know that he was suppose to be Chinese because he did look it. Just like David Carradine in the TV series Kung Fu.
ОтветитьI like Charlie Chan movies but it is interesting that all the other members of his family and other characters are suppose to be Chinese are Chinese or at least Asian except for the main character. Why did take to the fifties and sixties for non whites to play lead roles in movies in their own country? All my descendants were in this country in the 1860's, so there is no one that is more American than me just because of unjust laws and customs.
ОтветитьI have always said that there was only one actor that was JAMES BOND Sean Connery and so it is true for Charlie Chan WARNER OLAND was Charlie Chan.
ОтветитьThe United States sent its athletes to the 1936 Olympics. The audience at the time would have known what was going on in Germany - the newspapers were full of stories. These movies were light entertainment, not political analysis. Charlie Chan in Panama features a spy with a German name - the implication was obvious.
ОтветитьYes, especially interesting because the 1936 Olympics were such a centerpiece of Nazi propaganda efforts of the time, allowing Hitler to gain international prestige. The Nazis were very efficient in hiding their most vicious and repressive activities during the short period they were in the spotlight. I guess the makers of the film were either ignorant of the truth or, more likely, afraid of upsetting a foreign market. At least the film did include footage of Jesse Owens.
Ответитьcharlie chan was the man back then
Ответитьcharlie chan was the back then
ОтветитьThe destroyer shown, DD 345 was the USS Preble
Ответитьhow many charlie chan movies involved nazis?
ОтветитьThanks for posting this is my favorite.

ОтветитьCharlie's role model--I forgot the Hawaiian detective--foiled some of the island's greatest criminals!
Ответитьthank-you
ОтветитьGreat video but it is horrible all these ads GOOGLE puts on all the pages now!!! >:(
ОтветитьThis movie was typical Hollywood blinders-on (everything is OK in the world) movie, while ignoring the persecution of anti-Nazis. The police are depicted as an OK bunch, while ignoring the SS forces that were in charge of organized evil at the time. It is still a good Charlie Chan movie. Although actor was not Chinese, the film does treat the Chinese characters with respect.

ОтветитьNot true. As he was THE TOP COP in Hawaii and could very much afford to do all of that and more, and also on the tax-payers expense!
ОтветитьIn these movies, Charlie got to fly on the Hindenburg, the PanAm Clipper - 2 modes of transportation a guy on a cop's salary could never have afforded in the 30's
