Ando is one of my favorite architects. I'm surprised he took on this job also. His work definitely sings more in natural lush environments. 53 million for that is insane.

I like how everyone in the comment section keeps comparing this to prison like aesthetics, when in reality all homes that are made with concrete look like prisons before all the paint, furnishing, stucco and so on.

It made me wonder if I bought that painting and destroyed it what would happen to me. I am sure they are protected and would get arrested.😊 By the way about this house seeing how crowded it is I would call it modern Harlem. 😅

Knowing it was a Tadao Ando design: 55 mil/ knowing Kanye owns it: 14 mil.

So $53 MILLION for a property with ZERO privacy. The neighbors (on either side) are about 10 feet away. All this to live in Malibu...really. I guess it's a status thing. The building itself has the charm and appeal of a bunker.

the whole area looks awful ... an entire coast ruined. to pay even 10 million is ridiculous, no matter what building would be squeezed into that row

The comments about this style of brutal modern architecture relating to the environment and its texture, colours and so on are very insightful. There are some minimalistic, even industrial buildings in England on various sought-after beaches, like in Cornwall, Brighton or Dorset, but often, especially when their environment is bleak, they don’t work.

If u can afford to pay 53 m you can afford to hire legal council to come up with a strategic plan to buy it for 20m . Plus that house is going to get swallowed by the sea once climate change melts the ice.

Rising sea levels are a real thing. These houses will be underwater in 20 years. Bad investment.

I do not care if the architect is considered a "genius" the building is hideous": cold, pedestrian, unoriginal, dehumanizing. It looks like a typical 60s modern building from El Salvador.

The fact that this architect is considered a "genius" just shows you how screwed up the world of elitist architecture is.

Ando has to have his buildings surrounded by beautiful nature, because that is what is needed to soften and counteract the ugliness of his buildings. Almost any reasonably sized building will look good in the middle of a beautiful valley. When Ando does not have nature to counteract the ugliness- such as in Malibu- then his building just reveals its inherent ugliness.

There must have been some industrial sized corruption and influence peddling that allowed this beach to be built on...and destroyed. It should have been left to nature so folks could have enjoyed it.

Buying an overpriced house with no yard on top of a destroyed beach in Malibu-when there are so many other nice places to live- has no attraction to me.

This clapped out concrete block is worth $50k tops. The building will degrade and crumble without some VERY expensive work being done to it. Its also shoulder tk shoudler with other houses and its meant to be a single stand property.

how can anyone live in these garbage malibu homes on the beach. i'd rather live across the street up the hill, with the view.. and not being 20 inches from either of my neighbors.

Alas, there were no takers, and within a few months the price had been slashed all the way down to $39 million. Now, after nearly three years languishing and exposed to the elements, the property is finally in escrow to be sold for $21 million—a staggering $36 million less than West paid.
As first reported by The Real Deal, the discount-minded buyer is Belwood Investments, a California-based real estate crowdfunding firm that’s been flipping homes since 2018. The new owner plans to raise at least $5 million to restore the unfinished property to its original state during the next 12 to 16 months and then put it back up for sale at around $40 million.
