NixOS is Mindblowing

So, just to be very clear: NixOS is linux, not its own operating system. It's a linux that does the 40 year old BSD trick of having most configuration options in one ascii file. Nothing new here, and both OpenBSD and NetBSD do it better.

This is available for download through Gnome Boxes so interested to see what it's like. I prefer to use Boxes whenever possible to try Linux on Linux. VirtualBox is good for Linux on Windows and Windows on Linux.

I'm just shaking my head at this hedge fund company, their I.T. staff and the nonsense of deploying something that isn't more mainstream than this. I wouldn't do this for a million dollars per year in salary in the same way that I don't program in Java. Fast-forward and this company will be out of business in three years because of decisions like this and your resume will contain an ugly/obscure flavor of Linux that will come to bite you later.

Question: from a security perspective is this OS not more 'vulnerable' in the case of a malicious actor needing only 1 tiny file to reproduce the entire user environment (off-site) and therefore also ALL the users data, etc too... or is this not accurate?

I can imagine a setup where someone has fine tuned an LLM (local or commercial) with a feast of random sample configs......then builds a little helper script that lets you generate Nix configs on the fly with natural language prompting. It would effectively be building an OS by the power of thought.

Finally I found the perfect os. My long journey was Ubuntu > Kubuntu > Xubuntu > Linux Mint > Debian > Arch Linux > NixOS

Thanks to this video, I've tried Linux for the first time, and now migrated to it. Everything in NixOS worked straight out of the box, and although in the end I still needed to do a lot of configuration and figuring out, it is easier to set up lagless and optimized system than on Windows. Much less work and arcane knowledge required. And result? I have a more stable, prettier and better working system!

Fyi you can use the nixfmt utility to prettify your configuration.nix, hardware-configuration.nix, flakes files. Add to environment.systemPackages in configuration.nix, or temp install with `nix-env -iA nixos.nixfmt`.

How does NixOS acheive reproducibility if you don't specify version numbers of the system packages that you want to install?

Loving everything in one file, has some security limitations in that you couldn't easily apply RBAC to allow specific users to change speicific things but that not really its use case i think.

I started using Linux back in 2007 and did my share of distro hopping, yet i never heard about NixOS back then. I think it is because i didn't have a broadband internet connection and I used to buy IT magazines that included Linux CD-ROMs and DVD's. Finally I settled with Ubuntu because it worked fine on my Thinkpad and that's what I've being using since.

i have been using nix for project system dependencies (shell.nix) for the last 8 years, and for 2 years now i finally have also NixOS workstation (many companies dont let you run linux)
