I remember having a magnifying glass + light addon for the OG Gameboy. And bootleg cartridges with 100 games on them were a thing even back in the 90-ties.

For me, this is the video of 2023. It is such a perfectly balanced, informed, clear and instructional video. I simply love it. I've used emulators for years but have never ventured into handheld emulators outside of my phone and I have always wanted to. A month ago my partner said "I want a gameboy for xmas! I want to play the games I played as a kid!" My first thought was... yeah, me too, sounds great but... gameboys are surely a bit crap now? This video is the perfact answer to this dilema and I really feel she will be able to make the best decision after watching it. Thank you for adding 34.3% more happiness to xmas this year!!!

I will never forget the day I bought my original GameBoy soon after launch. As soon as we got in the car at Toys R Us, I got everything out of the box and fired it up. It sounds so remidial but hearing the stereo sound "ding ding" when I fired up Tetris was pretty awesome.

Your memories aren't faulty about the batteries. Back then 30 years ago, batteries weren't as good. These days Alkaline batteries are everywhere, but back then they were more often than not Carbon Zinc batteries. Which are garbage.

Nintendo was aiming for 10 hours on a set of 4 carbon zinc batteries of the era. After Alkaline batteries became popular, they discovered that 30 hours was obtainable for the original DMG. So when they made the gameboy pocket, they switched to using two AAA cells which gave 10 hours of gameplay. When they made the gameboy color with its power hungry color screen, they switched back to two AA cells which netted roughly 10 hours of gameplay.

Did this guy even have one when they were new? was he even born?. The OG Gameboy was a miracle when it first came out. So loved and so many hours and a real life saver for me. Battery life about 4 hours you needed a good light source, the speaker was quiet even when turned up max, The screen scratched if you so much as looked at it, yes the ghosting was real. I will have to buy one off the fleabay as my old one is no longer working though I do have a few other options for playing the games as everything up to sp was backwards compatible.

It's neat to play on an old machine, but I don't get how people at least signal that they prefer some original hardware. The original GB screen was so bad. I noticed the same bleeding on the TI-85.

But I do understand the situations when original hardware was better--most times, the original controllers best pretty much any modern recreation. I don't get screen filters for scanlines or bleeding, unless perhaps if it's for Atari 2600 or Apple II, where the artifacts between pixels was part of the original color effect. I cannot get the sound of the NES triangle waveform playing through a wooden console television I picked up 10 years ago (which I shortly had to get rid of).

But if these are all ROMs, doesn't that mean they won't be running quite 100% to how a real game would run on the hardware?

I didn't have a gameboy when it came out (I was an atari lynx owner). So when I got older I decided to buy a gameboy. I also upgraded the screen and replaced the batteries with a rechargeable battery pack. I love it. First off I love the simplicity of the games and it amazes me what developers where able to make the system do. The second thing that I really love is the size of the machine. Yes it's bulky, but to me that is part of the charm.

“This is probably a case made somewhere in china by some third party in some factory somewhere blah blah blah”…

…yeah, EXACTLY what Nintendo did back when this was released by subcontracting chinese factories to produce their plastic products while their own factories only produced the chipsets.

People think Nintendo somehow adds Magic Fairy Pixie Dust straight from disneysvagina or something when they contract out their plastic products… no… anyone can take the exact specs and have these cases produced using the original plastic specifications and end up with a casing no better or worse than the original.

The worst is people who want those crappy original boxes. They weren’t even cardboard! They were cardstock! The reproductions are available in the same spec and thickness of material with the same glossy ink flat printed then folded… but why bother when there’s OTHER reproductions that are even better quality because they don’t use the same flimsy cardstock material and brittle ink finish.

But no, keep assuming Nintendo made something that you can’t simply order from a Chinese factory in quantities of 100-10000000000 with the same materials, ink, and finish.

👏

The buttons were just like that. Same for PS1 controller and all systems of that age. It's why we have the Nintendo thumb on the right hand that can angle backwards. If you grew up with later controllers, they didn't destroy your tendons anymore.

I liked the original Nintendo Game Boy. I got mine in the 1990's. I used to play it all the time. It has 8-bit graphics (similar to the NES). The Game Boy has four operation buttons labeled "A", "B", "SELECT", and "START", and a directional pad (d-pad), which make the controls similar to that on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) controller. It was strictly a black-and-white affair (or more accurately, black-and-greenish), displaying its graphics on a small LCD screen. I had Super Mario Land, Tetris, In Your Face, Mickey's Dangerous Chase, Kirby's Dream Land, Tiny Toon Adventures: Babs' Big Break, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Lock 'N Chase, Lazlo's Leap, Castlevania: The Adventure, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Pac-Man, Golf, Kid Icarus: Of Myths & Monsters, Yoshi, Metroid II: The Return of Samus, Tamagotchi, DuckTales 2, Madden '95, QBillion, Qix, The Hunt for Red October, and World Bowling. In 1994, a Super Game Boy add-on allowed all Game Boy cartridges (later the Game Boy Camera, and dual mode Game Boy Color cartridges (in Game Boy-mode)) to be played in color on the Super NES. It was the most excitement any TV had since it got cable. I would have Alleyway, DuckTales, Dr. Mario, RoboCop, The Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3: Invasion of the Spider-Slayers, Double Dragon, Double Dragon 3: The Arcade Game, Paperboy, Paperboy 2, Kung-Fu Master, R-Type, Super R.C. Pro-Am, Bo Jackson: 2 Games in One - Baseball & Football, the Mega Man games (Mega Man in: Dr. Wily‘s Revenge, Mega Man II, Mega Man III, Mega Man IV, and Mega Man V), Beetlejuice, Q*bert for Game Boy, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends, The Ren & Stimpy Show: Space Cadet Adventures, Joe & Mac, Yoshi‘s Cookie, Kirby‘s Pinball Land, Tiny Toon Adventures 2: Montana‘s Movie Madness, Batman: The Animated Series, Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Contra: The Alien Wars, the Donkey Kong Land games (Donkey Kong Land, Donkey Kong Land 2, and Donkey Kong Land III), Street Fighter II, Killer Instinct, The Getaway: High Speed II, Iron Man/X-O Manowar in: Heavy Metal, Casper, Mole Mania, Hercules, The Fidgetts, Bust-A-Move 2: Arcade Edition, Turok: Battle of the Bionisaurs, James Bond 007, Wario Land II, Brain Drain, The Smurfs, Frogger, Small Soldiers, The Rugrats Movie, and Super Breakout. The last time I played the original Game Boy was in 1999. I want to repurchase one day, so I can play each of the games in the system as well several Game Boy Color-colored game paks, like Super Breakout (GBC), Frogger (GBC), Wario Land II (GBC), The Rugrats Movie (GBC), Pac-Man: Special Color Edition, Ms. Pac-Man: Special Color Edition, R-Type DX and more.

The Nintendo Game Boy ran for 10 years from the late 80's to late 90's (1989-1999). So, now I know have own the Game Boy, lame games would have didn’t prevented me from getting more games for the NES (though, I did get a batch of games on the NES too). I think there's an argument to be made that sure, due to the Game Boy's longevity, the games later on ended up being better than late-era 1992-1994 NES games, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, TaleSpin, Batman: Return of the Joker, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Rampart, The Addams Family, Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, Hudson Hawk, Paperboy 2, Hook, F-15 Strike Eagle, Hatris, Darkwing Duck, Yoshi, Krusty's Fun House, The Blues Brothers, Felix the Cat, Home Alone, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Prince of Persia, Swamp Thing, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends, Best of the Best: Championship Karate, George Foreman's KO Boxing, Joe & Mac, Yoshi's Cookie, Battletoads/Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team, Jurassic Park, Cool World, The Addams Family: Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt, Bubble Bobble Part 2, Battleship, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Tetris 2, Nigel Mansell's World Championship, Championship Pool, Last Action Hero, Cliffhanger, Jimmy Connors Tennis, Wayne's World, Lemmings, WWF King of the Ring, Alfred Chicken, and The Jungle Book, but many of the good Game Boy games are, to me, viewed though the lens of, "wow, it's a wonder how they managed to make this feel as good as an NES game."

I guess the most of the advanced Game Boy games getting mentioned came out years after the Super NES released, and ended up more like Super NES design games, such as Pit-Fighter, Spanky's Quest, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Wordtris, Race Drivin', Zool: Ninja of the "Nth" Dimension, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Chuck Rock, the Mortal Kombat games, the Sports Illustrated games, We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story, Spider-Man/X-Men in: Arcade's Revenge, F1 Pole Position, Riddick Bowe Boxing, Black Bass: Lure Fishing, Super Chase H.Q., Total Carnage, Captain America and the Avengers, Ultima: Runes of Virtue II, Lamorghini American Challenge, Jeopardy!: Sports Edition, Mickey's Ultimate Challenge, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, Cool Spot, Tiny Toon Adventures: Wacky Sports Challenge, Samurai Shodown, WildSnake, Contra: The Alien Wars, the Madden games, WWF Raw, The Pagemaster, BreakThru!, seaQuestDSV, Yogi Bear in Yogi Bear's Goldrush, Daffy Duck: The Marvin Missions, Jurassic Park Part 2: The Chaos Continues, The Flintstones, Pac-Attack, Pac-In-Time, Elite Soccer, NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, True Lies, Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf, Jungle Strike, Urban Strike, the NHL games, Judge Dredd, the Donkey Kong Land games, Batman Forever, Primal Rage, Foreman for Real, Earthworm Jim, Street Fighter II, Shaq Fu, NFL Quarterback Club '96, Killer Instinct, the FIFA games, Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Vegas Stakes, Zoop, Frank Thomas' Big Hurt Baseball, Prehistorik Man, Cutthroat Island, College Slam, NBA Live '96, Toy Story, Olympic Summer Games: Atlanta 1996, Tetris Attack, Disney's Pinocchio, Street Racer, Kirby's Star Stacker, Ken Griffey, Jr. Presents Major League Baseball: Game Boy Version, Harvest Moon GB, and Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow, felt almost more like black and green and/or black and white SNES games rather than NES games, trying to run on 8-bit hardware than NES games. Conceptually and technically, games were more mature across the GB’s lifespan than across the NES, Super NES and N64.
