In 1881, Joseph Swan of Newcastle upon Tyne had already opened a factor in Benwell making lightbulbs with carbon filaments. It is hard to claim you invented something when a factory has been open for a year making your 'invention'

He did not invent the Carbon filament. What he did do, was patent: "new and useful Improvements in Incandescent Electric Lamps" and he filed patent to improvements in the Manufacture of those filaments.

And he was the mastermind behind the Telephone! In addition to Columbus did NOT discover America. In 3rd grade we all chose a famous creator to write a report on. Mine was called Latimer Lights. I failed and my teacher Mrs Burrows gave me a book about Thomas Edison and gave me 3 days. My Dad.hit the roof. A major school district squabble happened. I turned in the same paper per my Father and she gave me an incomplete. I almost failed 3rd grade over it. I am happy to see schools are beginning to teach accurate history. We still have a long way to go.

It was a European man who invented the lightbulb. Edison made it more commercially viable. Lewis did it even further.

I find it incredibly sad that so many on here wish to distort, or completely destroy, the truth, just to be able to say 'A black man did it', almost as if they believe that this would mean that they also invented it, and want to bask in reflected glory.
Why can they not simply accept history, and the truth, and also recognise that while Latimer did not invent the light bulb, or the carbon filament, or the telephone, he did make considerable contributions to a number of devices which help us all to use these devices daily.

What did he actually invent though?

Joseph Swan patented the carbon filament in 1878, 3 years before Latimer did any work on light bulbs. Latimer was one among many who patented their own designs in 1881 and 1882. His designs did not make the filament light bulb last longer.
Lewis Latimer did not invented the carbon filament as stated in this video.
