overpopulation is an eco fascist idea at heart.

for example there was a field of grass farm in the 12th century, then that farm family kept populating over the generations and they had to keep building houses on that field. They had no where else to grow much of a garden anymore. They had but to crowd in the cities. The cities became crowded too.Rents and demands for housing costs went up because of demand. San francisco is one example.

If a countries people are not getting what they need like enough food or shelter the first place you should look is a corrupt government that's almost always the reason you couldn't end world hunger no matter how much money is given it just goes into the wrong pockets, plus the population bomb is a lie the population is decreasing almost everywhere even China.

Yes, I remember that presidential race between Carter and Reagan. Carter kept bringing up the burning deer, and Reagan kept laughing maniacally at the idea of deer being on fire. I guess everyone else thought it was funny too, and voted for him.

Simon was so confident he took an uneven bet. Were Erlich right, prices could increase many orders of magnitude. (The bet was based on the difference in prices at the beginning/end.) Then Simons loss would be huge. If simon won, prices can't go below zero, limiting Erlich's exposure.😁

This bet was actually a great proxy. Paul Ehrlich and others like him on the left have always been preaching scarcity and doom. The flavor of their message today has shifted from overall population concerns to now limiting our quality of life. They want to take away your cars and your air travel. They want to limit your consumption of meat and good food. They want to punish you for having a gasoline engine or for using natural resources to raise millions out of abject poverty to a better standard of living. Their solution is to give all the godlike distribution power to an elite small group of people who they believed to be morally and intellectually superior. I have no problem with a large global population so long as it is easily controlled and subjugated to their will. For this purpose they use arguments like equitability and environmental concerns. We want equality of opportunity not equality of outcome. When people rise out of subsistence level poverty, they naturally take better care of their environment because they start thinking long-term rather than just surviving for a few days on whatever food and get their hands on. This video covers this famous bet between these two thinkers but it misses the overall points. Paul Ehrlich should be discredited and never listened to again. Instead, they’ve merely repackage his same argument and put it forward as another doomsday prediction.

This misses the point Julian Simon was making. He’s saying that even with growing population we can overcome these problems. More people mean more solutions. The reasons metals were used is because Ehrlich said we’d be running out with more people using them. Simon said that we’d find more because a larger population can come up with more ideas to solve the problems.

This presentation is a total fraud and misrepresents Simon's side. Typical leftist claptrap. Ehrlich was wrong on everything, the population has grown and as Simon declared, human ingenuity has produced more food from less land. Bad governments produce hunger and poverty. Humans are always an asset - if free.

Surprised that TED-Ed would allow the spread of misinformation. This video makes false claims. To claim that we now know that population is not a problem is a lie. A foolish lie that will misguide many.

Ehrlich is still right, it was his efforts that help reduce the growth rate and delay his prediction. He was also a little off on what technology would be developed in the future, like fracking. He's still right and we're still accelerating off the cliff.

"Experts largely agree" - quality science. Another "idea worth spreading" thin.

(also, "economic growth and environmental protections don't have to be at odds" is a non sequitur on a video about population. These are different things)

the only way humans can live long term on this planet is to limit our numbers to say one billion FOREVER !
sorry but logic dictates there is no other way , every action ,etc etc .

For some every year is worse than the one before, and for many life is a waste of time, and further time, and they'd no way to get out of this existence but to die

For some life is living death alive: a life sentence with a sentence at the end you've been through a few times, the only peaceful way to go is an opioid or barbiturate peaceful drink or pills, the rest will experience death, even a "peaceful" death is suffocating in your sleep for 13 minutes, that's like subgenre breaking into your house and strangling you. If they legalized and made a peaceful euthanasia 45 percent of the world would say thanks and take a drink and say, finally they're as wise as the cavemen now

"We have the resources to support a growing human population, but we're currently failing to distribute those resources equitably. And changing that should be our priority."

This was very insightful to hear! It's exactly what we should be looking into.

Can't say this is my fave Ted-Ed video. So population doesn't matter? We're on a finite planet with billions of humans. If another animal population grew like this, it'll be culled. Only 4% of mammals are wild animals now--the rest being humans and farm animals we breed.

People need to stop breeding.

Granted, while the resources on earth are limited no matter how you look at it (After all; there's only so much matter), it's such a high amount that overpopulation isn't going to happen anytime soon.

However sustainability is still a major concern, as time is a major factor in a lot of resource distributions.

But in the end it is a fair point that it's not about resources themselves but rather willingness to control them better.
