The greens were still Bermuda and slow. You had to really rap the long putts and accelerate through the short ones. A year away from Raymond Floyd and his 5 wood. It was a different game. Watson had faltered many times in the majors before winning the "British" Open later that year.

Another fact that gets lost due to all the drama of the final round is Nicklaus playing with Arnold Palmer in the third round. Their competition was intense, and they typically played to beat each other, sometimes forgetting to play the golf course, that's just how heated their rivalry was in those days. Nicklus shot over par in the third round. Having shot low rounds in the first and second rounds. This was a classic duel between two talented up and coming pros vs the established super star!

Nicklaus putt on 16 unnerved Weiskopf, but actually it only tied him with Jack at that point. Great theatre on 16 as Tom Watson dumped a couple in the pond, with that delay Miller & Weiskopf were able to see all the drama of Jack's amazing putt!

I wonder why Jack wasn’t in the final pairing. He was in solo second after the third round.

Weiskopf with the Monty move on 16, ahanging to the weaker club and no saucing it into a legacy destroyer.

Some people aren't allowed to win the Masters. Weiskopf makes a 15 footer for birdie on 15 to take a one shot lead, and Nicklaus has 35 or 40 feet for birdie on 16 right after that. Weiskopf in great position. Of course Nicklaus drains it, and Weiskopf hits the extremely weak tee shot on 16 and gets bogey. If Nicklaus puts before he knows Weiskpf makes his, Nicklaus may have missed that, but he zeroed in.

Do you realize that Johnny Miller never won a major where there was real pressure on him. He played freely in the last round of the US Open and won that with a 63, but he was more of a choker than Weiskopf.

Wonder why no more players use Trevino method when playing at 12th?

I noticed they had ball mark repairers on 12. Don't know if they did on other holes but the one guy walked on Jack's line to the hole. I would think they warned them of that maybe. I never noticed that before. I'm sure it was just a mistake but that's a big no no.

A real treat to see 1964 pga championship winner Bobby Nichols in color. I grew up 5 minutes from Columbus County Club where Nichols won that tournament 6 years before I was born.

I was at my second Masters, stationed in the JAG office at Fort Gordon. Anyone in the military could attend for 5 bucks provided you were in uniform. I was at 16 when Jack made his putt. I went to Rich’s Department Store on Monday and bought the green and white Hathaway shirt that Jack wore on that Sunday. Still my greatest memory in all of sports.

This was the first golf tournament I remember watching on TV as a teenager, and Nicklaus became my instant idol. I saw him in person 3 years later playing an exhibition match, and got to interview him in 1996 when I was a reporter covering majors. What a thrill, the greatest golf champion of them all.

Was this Masters a great promotion for MacGregor or what? All three bags of Nicklaus, Weiskopf, and Miller were MacGregor

Tom Weiskopf is of course remembered for being one of the best golfers of his era but people also forget what a fantastic commentator he was. His coverage of the 86 masters was brilliant. His passing was a true loss to the game of golf.

How is it that Ohio produces so many great golfers LOL

I've been playing decent golf for many years. I'm 57. I would like to turn back the clock and play with them. I would bring my barber with me. I'd be the only golfer who didn't look like he was wearing a helmet.

R.I. P. Tom Weiskopf, One of the best swings in the history of golf, but he admitted he didn't have the concentration that Nicklaus had. It took all the concentration and skill Nicklaus could muster to make the putt at 16. Weiskopf did everything but win this tournament, and he admitted it bothered him for some time. Still,a great champion.
